  1. Call me crazy, but hands up who thinks the first KotOR would have been as good as it was if BioWare had the same amount of time on it as Obsidian did KotOR2? Sure BioWare also had to include engine development time, but they were working on the entire project as a whole for that period. The biggest problem I see is that the script/dialogue reads as a first or second draft and the whole game feels like it's slapped together with what was already done by the due date. Obsidian were obviously on the right track and I feel LucasArts have a big hand in this.
  2. I noticed a distinct lack of quality in the opening starfield which looked just horrible. The next time I really felt it was with the FMV cutscene showing the Sith guy alone on the bridge of the Harbinger. That video was made with an in-game render and you can distinctly see that there was no FSAA used to do it. That said, I think worrying too much about the cutscene quality isn't necessary as long as they convey the message they need to. As much as we like pretty visuals it is better that the narrative is the focus.
  3. Initially in the residential area of the Telos station I had smooth gameplay. However, after a few minutes of exploration I got rather choppy stuttering. The effect is only is the central residential area and disappears when I leave for another area (such as the west wing). The funny thing is that sometimes when I return to the main residential area it is still choppy, but only that area. More strange is the fact that it is not always so - I can return to that area and have it run as smooth as silk at times. To go that one step further, all this is within the same game session.
  4. Drivers can still be the cause of issues even if other games one has work fine. I think this needs to be made clear. The extent of these issues can greatly vary. However, I'm not here to argue the point, I just suggest you check out the first post of this thread. That's not to say KotOR2 doesn't have coding problems. This is just another way to be pro-active and help eliminate the drivers as a problem.
  5. For closure on my problem - I installed the 5.2 Cats and the problem is gone. I have a little slowdown in some larger areas but performance is okay overall. Hopefully a future patch will tweak performance, but until then the game is quite playable so far.
  6. KotOR ran perfectly out of the box for me. I'm having minor troubles with KotOR2 but have yet to try a couple of things. Mind you, the former I played on my older system which had an nVidia card (GF4 Ti4600). My new system has a Radeon X800XT and the troubles may be driver based... which I shall find out when I get home this afternoon.
  7. Let me apologise for not wanting to argue about laptops and get back to the point of the thread... I have but one problem so far. When item labels appear on screen (action menu, enemy info, etc) the game exhibits a stutter or micro-freeze. I've experimented a bit and I'm pretty sure that the labels are the only consistent factor. Take for example the tank where your character begins. If I use the mouse or cursor to spin the screen I get the freeze just as my character's tank (the only one with an label/action menu) comes into view from off the side of the screen. Once the text has appeared after the freeze my motion continues flawlessly, even with the item on the screen, until a full revolution and the text's appearance once again causes this stutter. I've gone into the hallway where there are no such labels in range and spin without any hint of stuttering. This hall contains transitions from short to medium ranges which I originally thought was the problem when I was back on the Ebon Hawk before making the label connection, but here it is smooth as silk until I'm in range of an action menu. So, I'll first ask if anyone can experiment and back this up? If it's common then it might provide the devs or the forum tech-heads with a little insight. My card is a Gigabyte X800XT with 4.11 Cats. I'm also running a 3GHz P4 with 1GB DDR. So far I have tried lowering my graphics details and adding the Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 line to the .ini file. I have switched the master FSAA and AF controls to application control and turned them off in the game. I do not overclock my card. I am going to be downloading the latest Cats and see if this fixes it, afterall it's often the drivers, right? Regardless of the results I shall be sure to post them here. It may take a while as I'm on 56k and have to queue it up to download when I go to bed. Then I've got work tomorrow... gah! Maybe I should throw a sickie and just play KotOR2.
