McDonald's will take over the world, I tell you!
Reveilled replied to jaguars4ever's topic in Way Off-Topic
Aside from the Kosovo War (for its first two days), The 1989 Panama War, and the Kargil War, no two countries with a McDonalds restraunt have ever gone to war with each other. But I prefer Pizza to Burgers, so I'd rather go to Pizza Hut. -

Obsidian Forums Diplomacy Game 1 (OBS-1)

Now I'm not suggesting anything but the 'full version' is free to d/l as it's time-limited, not feature limited. Now after your hour is up you have to upgrade to the full version. Upgrading basically "patches" your executable file. Now say we're to buy the actual CD, but get tired of inserting the damn disc...we could visit www.gamecopyworld.com as rid ourselves of the hassle, by using a "patched" executable for your legitimately bought software. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Erm...I think it's best if we just play the old fashioned legal way, at least for our first game. Besides, once I recieve Ender's list, we'll be ready to start the game, so no sense in waiting for everyone to download that. Can we stick to the original idea? Please? -
It filters the word diсk? Are you suuuuure?
-
I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. :D
-
I'm now reading Solar Lottery, Philip K. Diсk's first novel.

It is, just email me a list of the countries in the order you'd prefer to play them. There's a new thread in PnP about it.

The nation of Burgundy was briefly one of the most powerful states in Europe, extending from the French Province of the same name up to the netherlands. It's duke at the time, who was not only called charles but was the spitting image of our current prince, was intent on ressurecting the ancient crown and nation of Lotharingia. Had he been successful, the state of Lotharingia would have stretched from Marseilles to Amsterdam. Alas, he died in retreat from battle in Switzerland while attempting to take it over, and Burgundy was carved up between France and Austria. Oh, and Ender, I need your preference list for Diplomacy.

Someone needs to read the rules a bit closer! Every unit in the game has the same strength. If a unit moves into an occupied province, it's strength (1) matches the strength of the defender (1) and so the move fails, as follows (underlined moves fail): France: A Paris-Burgundy Germany: A Burgundy Holds In this example, the German army stays in Burgundy. When two attacks of equal strenth are made on a province, both attacks fail, any unit in the province stays there, otherwise the province remains vacant: A Spain-Marseilles A Burgundy- Marseilles In this instance, if Marseilles was vacant, it would remain vacant, with the result that it would be possible for France to build in that vacant Home Centre in Winter Adjustments. As such, France might use the above moves to prevent any movement by another power into the province, while keeping it vacant for builds. In order for an attack to suceed, it must be supported by another unit. The unit providing support must be in a province from which it could make an attack into the province it is supporting an attack into (i.e. An army in belgium can support an attack into Ruhr, because it could itself attack Ruhr. A fleet in belgium could not, as Ruhr is an inland province, and so the fleet in Belgium could not attack Ruhr): France: A Paris-Burgundy A Marseilles S A Paris-Burgundy Germany: A Burgundy Holds In this example, The German army in Burgundy is dislodged, the French army in paris moves into Burgundy, and the Army in Marseilles remains in Marseilles. If the army giving support is itself attacked, its support will be cut: France: A Paris-Burgundy A Marseilles S A Paris-Burgundy Germany: A Burgundy Holds A Piedmont-Marseilles Note that though the army in Piedmont's move to Mareilles failed, the fact that it attempted the move was sufficient to cut the support. Support can be given to a foreign power as follows: France: A Paris-Burgundy England A Marseilles S French A Paris-Burgundy Germany: A Burgundy Holds Support can be given in defence: France: A Paris-Burgundy A Marseilles S A Paris-Burgundy Germany: A Burgundy Holds A Ruhr S A Burgundy In this case, the Strength of the defender has been increased to two, equalling the strength of the attack, so the attack fails. If the French attack had been supported by a third army, its strength of three would have exceeded the two and been successful. Remember that a defensive suppot order does not count towards attack strength, nor visa versa. For example, if in the example we have been using, A Paris had been attacked from another province, A Marseilles support of A Paris into Burgundy would not count towards A Paris' strength in an attack on it. For more information on Support, see pages 7 to 12 of your rulebook. Just waiting on EnderWiggin's list, now. -

Thanks, I've added them to the first post, and edited the map's colours slightly. -
Osaka is my favourite "lights on, but no-one behind the wheel" character. Her explanation of "bean knowledge"... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah! Osaka's definitely the best of the characters. My favourite part was when she went to wake Miss Yukari up with a carving knife. That was hilarious. :D Story (what story?) and characters aside, one of the things Azumanga Daioh really benefited from was a brilliant job done of translation. I really appreciated that they left all the cultural references in and provided translation notes explaining them instead of changing them to American references (though I think they did that in the Manga, making Yukari a Spanish Teacher). Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed how when Osakan dialect is translated into English, it always seems to be translated into a brooklyn accent?

I never much liked DBZ after I was twelve, primarily because I stopped watching dubbed anime at that point, and never liked it enough to buy DVDs. I prefer Ranma for my marial arts comedy. Of all the anime on CN, though, the best one had to be Tenchi Muyo. Especially the uncensored japanese dub. Sheer Brilliance. Of course, the best anime (and manga) ever would have to be Azumanga Daioh. So, so awesome.

Indeed. I'm just waiting for two more lists now, after which I'll send out an email with the addresses of players, what countries they are playing, and the date of the deadline for submitting moves. Then it's up to you all to email each other to plan strategies, discuss alliances, spread rumors and so on. I'll also post the same information on this thread. -
A few sources for the whole planet? I'm more inclined to think they're derived from one source: rising sea levels.

Flood Stories from Around the World. New Underwater Finds Raise Questions About Flood Myths.
-
Regarding the flood myth, the fact that every ancient culture on the planet has a flood myth that is fairly similar to all others suggests that it may hold a grain of truth. It has been speculated that if during the last ice age civilisation was sufficiently developed into cities and towns, these settlements would be placed largely along the coasts. Since the sea level would be ablut 200m lower than it is today, that would mean that said cities would be being built far out to "sea". When the ice age ends and the ice caps shed all that excess water, the sea level would rise extremely quickly, destroying pretty much every city on the planet. The water wouldn't cover the Earth, but when his civilisation's been destroyed and there's water in every direction, that might strike Joe Ancient as a distinction without much of a difference. And so when the surviviors finally begin to tell tales of the flood, there isn't much of a leap between "A flood that destroys all civilisation" and "A flood that covers the earth killing everything and everyone except the people and animals in one boat". Recently, there have been several finds of buildings situated underwater in various parts of the world, lending credence to the idea. So if the flood myth seems at all similar, it's probably because a slightly more realistic version of it actually happened. Also, I watched a documentary on Moses, and it was rather interesting. It said that around the time of the exodus from Egypt, there was a huge volcanic eruption on one of the greek islands. Being just beyond the curvature of the Earth relative to Egypt, said eruption would be visible by a pillar of smoke in the day, and by a glow and a leaping "pillar" of fire by night. Further, it said that the part about Moses parting the Red Sea was a mistranslation, and the actually parted the "Sea of Reeds", which could concieveably refer to any sea, lake or river in Egypt. However, if it was on the northern coast, and the shockwaves from the volcano just happened to cause a tidal wave in Egypt's direction at about the time Moses got there, the sea would first recede (letting the Jews pass), and then come back in the form of a massive tidal wave (drowning Pharoh's army). Curious, huh?

(w00t) Brilliant! Henceforth, I shall forever refer to England as The Welsh Congo. I have no idea why it would be called that, but I'm calling it that anyway. :D That website is great. Bookmaked! Oh, and mets (can I call you mets? Too bad, I'm calling you mets), I need your preference list for Diplomacy soonish. Just you jags and Wiggs left before I can assign countries.

Not at all. Maybe you'll remember to update it once in a while, unlike me. I actually had 509 posts like last month.

We need a sort of narrow eyed stare smiley. Ah, what the hell. It's mostly true. We're the ned capital of the planet.

What? Muhammad was the last prophet? Are you a Muslim, or something? The last prophet that hasn't been discredited was Malaclypse the Younger. Consult your pineal gland. You may be surprised at the results.

Indeed, the main advantage of England is that it is both an island and a corner power, and Russia has the advantage of four units (winter conditions are not replicated in game, so marching on Moscow isn't as hard as it might be) but other countries have other advantages. The game is pretty well balanced. Oh, and message recieved. That's 3/7 lists recieved.
