The AFI release list of 100 top movie quotes
Reveilled replied to kumquatq3's topic in Way Off-Topic
I think that list has some major flaws. How is "Open the pod bay doors, HAL" one of the quotes instead of "I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that", Seems to me the latter is the more videly used outside of the film. And "Huston we have a problem" isn't a quote from the film Apollo 13, it's from the actual mission itself, the film was just using the quote, not originating it. -
No offence to my esteemed fellow boardmember Kaftan, but I think this one might provide some more varied responses than the woman one, especially because different responders would wake up in different years. So, you wake up as yourself one day after your 12th birthday (you have bigger things to worry about than your presents). You retain all memory of everything that has happened since that time, and in order to expand possible answers, your 'muscle memory' is altered to fit your younger and smaller body (meaning that you can perform any physical tasks, like a martial art, without having the problem that you remember having longer limbs and such). What would you do?

What would you do if you woke up as a woman?
Reveilled replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Way Off-Topic
Well, I usually do it in front of a computer screen. -

I would do several things in the following order: 1. masterbate furiously in front of a mirror. ... umm... I think that's all I'd do different. -

If seven sets of moves are sent to me, all with the instruction that the player is happy for the turn to be concluded early, then I will conclude the turn early, otherwise, feel free to submit your moves early, Kaftan. -

Get Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, and if at all possible its Alien Crossfire expansion. SMAC is, quite simply, the best of all turn-based strategy computer games except possibly Colonisation. Plus, it is cheap. Buy it now. -

Washington Post - 23rd January 1901 Russian Military Exercises No Cause for Concern, Say Officials by Jason Davis, Balkan Correspondant Last week, smaller local European newspapers reported movement of Russian troops close to Eastern European borders, specifically along the borders and coastlines of Galicia and Rumania. Spokesmen for the Russian goverment have confirmed that these recent exercises undertaken by the Russian fleet stationed in Sevastopol as well as by the western army group in Warzaw, are part of a new policy of annual routine programs for maintaining morale and discipline in the troops. "It is not in any way a sign of any preparations for large-scale military operations in any area," said one official. Many people have become worried by such events, with the atmosphere of uncertainty over the diplomatic situation and recent changes of goverment in the major powers of Europe. When pressed for comment, the White House issued the following short statement: "We Americans and our European friends must aim to keep our rationale in situations where there is little real danger. The last thing anyone needs is a crisis triggered by simple rumours." -
I'm reading The Game of Diplomacy, by Richard Sharp, having finished both Solar Lottery and Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep?--both by PKD, of course--in the last few days. Reading the latter was especially difficult, as while the term for the robots in the film and game, "replicant", conjured up suitable images of murderous humanoid robots, the book's term, "andy", conjures up images of an overwight middle-aged football player with a five o clock shadow.

What company have you had a bad experience with?
Reveilled replied to Ellester's topic in Way Off-Topic
The risk in my experience is fairly small. Unless you're trying to plug an intel chip into an Athlon board, you should have very little trouble. After all, most computer-literate owners will replace hardware in premade machines over time in any case (more RAM, new graphics card, bigger hard drive, etc. etc.), so most parts tend to be pretty compatible with others. I really would recommend building a computer yourself. It's fun, educational, and when you're all done you'll have something to be proud of. Plus, you can use bits of your old PC in your new one. You can plug your old hard drive in with your new one and keep your data, take your old floppy drive over, you can take over a recently purchased graphics card or CD drive instead of paying for a similar new one in a premade, and so on and so forth. You don't save a huge deal ccompared to a premade if you're buying all the components new (what you save is the cost of the computer warranty, insurance and tech support), but if you can cannibalise your old machine, it could save you a lot of money. -

Washington Post - 21st January 1901 President Cites Concern Over European Instability by Jack Wilson, Washington, DC President Roosevelt today cited that while the United States has no intentions of interloping into European politics, he can not help but be concerned over growing instability in the region. "Several thriving expanionist countries and empires all have come under new leadership in a very short period of time," Roosevelt noted. "Each new leader will no doubt feel pressured to establish a strong show of force as new leaders." His concern seems to stem from the notion that already present expansionist desires, and the instability of so many regime changes at once could possibly instigate conflict within the region. He urges them to recognize the place of diplomacy, and how vital it has been in the growth of all European nations. And in the name of diplomacy, Roosevelt has offered up congradulatory notices to each of the new leaders within the region. Had they not all come to power within such a short period of time, he might have travelled or called to show his support to the new leaders entering office. However he questioned the banquet in France to celebrate the ascension of Kryoxer Baley. Roosevelt was quoted as saying "I wasn't aware France had important people to show up". -
Is that "Cross Change" or "Exchange" ...? " <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, I pronounce it X-Change, which I'd guess would be the correct pronunciation, because "cross change" suggest mere cross dressing, whereas "ex-change" (especially with one more letter) suggests something considerably more anatomical, which is precisely what the game is about. Umm...at least, that's what I've heard the game was about. I never played it. Wouldn't catch me playing a hentai game. Not I. Nosiree. "

Google, who took their perfectly good groups service, proceeded to brutally rape and murder it, and produce a bastard child presently called "beta" which is so unbelieveably god awful by comparison to its predecessor you'd think it was the result of fourteen generations of inbreeding. Grr. -
I knew it! New Jersey is actually X-Change 4.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it will only be the final set of orders that counts when I adjudicate the moves. Thus, you can send in orders well before the deadline, and still submit new orders later on (but before the deadline, of course) if you change your mind. This might help if you are unexpectedly absent at the last minute and can't write orders, so at least your units won't all stand still instead of following previous orders. -

Washington Post - 19th January 1901 President Reaffirms American Neutrality by Jack Wilson, Washington, DC President Roosevelt today reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the United States neutral in any coming conflict in Europe, stating "With the recent rise of several bloodthirsty warmongers in Europe, it seems inevitable to me that there will soon be a large conflict across the Atlantic. At present, it is not clear who will be on what side of this war, but I garuantee the American people that we will not under any circumstances be dragged into this bloodbath of a fight." The deaths of many top leaders in Europe, as well as recent elections in other states have led to the removal from power of the doves in many of Europe's greater powers. With the hawks in charge in many governments, nationalistic and jingoistic propaganda being spread throughout the continent, and the great powers gearing up for war and mobilising their armies, war in Europe seems unavoidable. However, the Washington Post is dedicated to providing detailed and accurate coverage of the war, and throughout the conflict our journalists will be reporting for your benefit from both the capitals of Europe and the front lines. (Remember, anyone can write an article for the Washington Post, though it should be emailed to me to preserve the writer's anonymity. This article, however is both my own and probably my last) -

Righto. From this point onwards, I have to ask that you not post anything that isn't specifically related to the game. Also, if possible, posts should be written ins the style of a newspaper article, though this is not strictly necessary. Oh yeah, and check your inboxes or the first post. EDIT: As an example, instead of just writing "I got France", one could write an article about the new president of France being sworn in today, his plans and intentions, etc. etc. -

Well, I'm actually on a super-high carbohydrate diet. My staple foods are bread, noodles, chips and crisps. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing that's burning all that up, however, it may just be that I'm not actually eating all that much. Whenever I look at those lists of all the portions of meat, vegetable, grain and dairy products you're supposed to eat each day, I find myself wondering how anybody could eat that much of anything in one day. Also, I don't drink or smoke (or eat red meat), which may be helping. My body is a temple. A temple to junk food. -

Nah. I've been eating crap for years now, I haven't eaten a green vegetable since I was four, and my BMI is pretty close to being underweight. I expect to be as thin as a rail when I contract heart disease. I can always start exercising if I start to get fat, though. -

Though if like me you're lucky enough to have an extremely fast metabolism, you'll never put on weight from it, your appearance won't suffer, and the first symptom you'll notice will be the fatal heart attack. That or intestinal cancer. -

Try a Roman Catholic marriage ceremony. If that doesn't put you to sleep, then you are worthy of a buddy trip with Dell Griffth. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually, I did one of them too. All the family on my mother's side are catholic, so I'm obliged to sit through hours long ceremonies (today was an entire mass) whenever anything important happens. And then there's the god awful party afterward. I don't even particularly like any of them, yet I have to go to a party with them too. ...Well, anyway, I think we need to get this thread back on the rails. The last thing I want is the thread to be closed before the game even gets off the ground. -

No word from Ender yet, and yes, I do indeed have a social life. I was at a christening today, though. For a heretical teaching, Christianity sure does have some boring ceremonies.
