Er, when the Conquistadors arrived in South America (in fast, hi-tech galleons) with plate armour, groovy hats and velvet codpieces (not to mention cannons), the locals were wearing feathers and had failed to develop even basic metallurgy. Well, I think there is a great deal of difference between a "first encounter" and cultures being in close contact for quite a long period of time, which seems to be our case as far as I understand it.
