  2. I agree with most of your suggestions. Except for Sword to Crossbow as a talent, IMO Fighters should have a better ranged accuracy as a base.

My problems with the Ranger and Fighter is that they are too focused on Ranged and Melee respectively. IMO, I think the abilities should try to be neutral in regards to Ranged or Melee with Talents being the deciding factor in determining if the character is a Ranged or Melee specialist. A dual-wielding Ranger and a sniper fighter sound like cool characters to play, but are currently unsupported. That should be changed.

  3. In most games I've Gm'd, I've gone the quest XP route because I didn't want to penalize players who came up with good ways to avoid combat to achieve the goal of the quest. This resulted in players trying to think outside the box when looking for solutions to the obstacles I put in their way. Obviously PoE will not have the flexibility as a Gm, but it is nice to know that if I can solve a quest through means other than combat I won't be missing out on XP.

And to further spin this off topic, I actually like PoE combat despite the bugs. I find it to be fun to shoot lions with oldtymey guns and beat beetles to death with morningstars.

  4. Passing thought here, but perhaps Stun, Helm and Tartantyco should be given their own subforum where they can argue about anything and everything related to the game!

"Get into slap fights over BG2's mechanics" Subforum?

Would probably cut down on posts in this forum by at least half.

  5. Big +1 on the ranged knockdown. Great idea.

For the gish weapon focus... not so sure. I think the fun from playing a gish is that you can buff yourself to ridiculous levels, but only for a short period of time. If you're as good with a sword as a fighter and additionally can cast spells, that's just kind of munchkiny. So I'd rather have talents/spells that let your wizard make mayhem in melee for great burst damage.

(Also I liked the paladin. Thought it struck a very nice balance between low-maintenance fighters and high-maintenance priests.)

Oh, I'm saying the existing weapon focus talents would benefit a Gish, as would hold the line. I think giving every class access to weapon specialization would be cool, but should delayed until you reach a higher level.

I like the Paladin in concept, but can not get it to work well for me in the game. Perhaps I just need to wait until bugs are cleared.

  6. You know what, Indira? I'm getting bored of this wrangling over attributes. It's really not a particularly significant feature of the mechanics anyway.

I'll agree there. Might boosting damage with rifles, spells, and melee makes about as much sense on willpower/perception(DnD Wis bundled these together) affectinghthe degree one can alter reality after offering a fortune in powdered diamond to a god.

I'd much rather talk about, say, what kinds of talents or spells to add to make, say, ranged fighters or gish wizards workable

I think Fighters should have a talent that lets them knockdown with ranged attacks. Perhaps a talent could allow them to apply defender to ranged attacks, sort of like an overwatch.

I think that a Gush would benefit from Hold the Line and weapon focus, but there could also be a talent that allows less speed penalty in armor. I would say spells that increase deflection, DT, and damage would be welcome additions for a Gish.

As it is, I find Paladins are much harder for me to play than Monks or Muscle Wizards. I think showing how far the auras extend would help a lot, as would adding a more defensive aura. IMO Flames of Devotion would work better as a short term boost rather than a single attack.

  7. What I wonder is if this had been a big deal if it had been an indie filmmaker and a film critic. I do not care who bones who - that belongs in a soap opera.

I think it would've been a bigger deal, as games are pretty niche. The main complaint I've seen is that when these relationships exist between press and the people the press coverage, there is a conflict of interest.

  8. So murderers and terrorists are more deserving of respect than a bunch of entitled, sexist jerks? That's messed up.

If you want to be technical, ISIS are also sexist jerks, but that sexism is less "no wimminz in mae viadyagamz" and more "women have no rights".

  9. What puzzles me about all this butthurt re the attributes is that by far the most common criticism -- that they don't affect builds enough -- can be changed by adjusting a dozen numbers in a spreadsheet. That's like three minutes of work. I literally can't think of anything in the game that's easier to change. Yet certain people here make it out like the entire game is rotten to the bone.

(Of course, the folks who think that wizards have to be intelligent and there can't be a stat that governs physical and magical damage BECAUSE REASONS won't be happy, but all I can say to that is... good.)

I think some people believe that because Intelligence is what determined Wizards' spell potency in DnD, it must govern spell potency in ALL fantasy settings. We could spend years arguing about which attribute should affect magic powahs for each class, but it is all moot when you factor that magic, as all fictional things, is up to the creator to determine the mechanics of. That in PoE Might affects damage of all things isn't any less realistic than how smart you are determining how hard to resist a fireball you create out of a ball of bat guano and sulfur(per Pathfinder rules) is.

  10. IIRC, only a small number of talents were implemented in the beta and more are planned for the game. Which is good, as all we have now are weapon focus, hold the line, and various upgrades for class abilities. Would be nice to get an idea of what other things talents can do, because the beta talents are pretty boring.
