  1. But I'm not having combat difficulties :)

If anything, I'm afraid it will become too easy if I build an "ideal" party. Also I want to save my copper coins because it's my first play through and I don't know if I'll need an absurd amount of money for something cool later on. (Don't answer that question please. I will learn the hard way, ha)

I enjoy running into people in the world and being pleasantly surprised when he/she turns out to be a potential companion... And I know I can just get rid of my generic companions if this happens but combat is just not that difficult at the moment so as I mentioned earlier, I don't feel a need to spend my copper.

I will definitely hire adventurers if I ever play it on hard/PoTD and build a better party because I'm assuming it will be necessary to have an actual proper party. Right now I'm at 2 wizards, a 2h wep fighter, a priest, and a chanter that I don't know what to do with just yet. It feels more authentic at the moment because I'm just a rag tag group of random adventurers that are just traveling together because it's convenient and safe.

I'll definitely hire my own adventurers on my next play through though! I'm barely getting through act 1 and I'm already planning my next play through    :dancing:  :dancing:  :dancing:

Oh, okay, I completely misunderstood. Carry on, then. You're doing exactly what you should. And your party seems just fine as is. :)

  2. Thanks, all.

Indeed, I am not looking for min maxed uber tanks or anything -- just trying to figure out how much resolve is really needed for instance (I do like dialogue -- so thanks for that advice), and is survival really needed,  etc.

But I do really appreciate everyone's advice to just dive in a mess around and learn by doing.   D:OS was not all that forgiving for noobs and so I felt like I needed to do my homework.  It was a great game but needed a bit too much homework.  Sounds like POE is easier to to just dive in and experiment. Anyway, thanks.

in the meantime -- if anyone has additional guides for 3.03 or thereabouts, please keep responding.

I am toying with a monk or a paladin to start, if it matters....

There's a beginner's guide Here. Not specific to 3.03, but it should be a decent starting point, if you've not seen it yet.

  3. I don't really want to create my own party members just yet... definitely on my next play through though!

I don't see the issue though. Even the way you go about it is 'in character', as you go to a tavern to 'hire' a mercenary (yeah, you have to pay for them). So create one if you're finding you need to round your party out, then just drop him off at your stronghold when you find another companion that you want to keep in the party. There's no effect on the game, other than the XP effect (slightly less XPs per character with bigger parties), but you don't strike me as someone that worries about that - and you have to deal with that when you add NPCs to your party anyway.

Sorry, not trying to be argumentative, I just wanted to point out that it's a viable option if you're having troubles with the combat difficulty, and there's no real reason to not do it if needed.

  4. Meh, it's still interesting to see the results, even if you can't draw any meaningful conclusions. I might add another option in the completion part though: those that have completed with White March and those that have completed without it.

I'm in the 50 to 59 age group and have only completed the game once, but without the WM content. I intend to do another complete run with the WM content though.

  5. When levelling up my party increasing certain skills is supposed to aid in certain conversations

When I meet a npc and a conversation begins which of my characters is having the conversation?

Also does it matter what order I place my characters in at the bottom of the screen?

Conversation checks only use your main character's stats. It does not matter which order the characters are in (other than affecting where they appear in whatever marching/battle formation you're using)

  6. The first time i played Pillars, i felt like "meh" too. I droped the game during act 2. After WM and some patchs came out, i tried again. Well, it was like a different game. Nowadays, i wonder if i like more Pillars or Baldur's Gate (may still be BG though). There are many things i hate in Pillars (The might attribute, stash, health system, useless immortal pets, healing spells uselesness, rest curing wounds, the fact that camping supplies are limited but you find some of them everywhere in the wilds including in the most unbelievable places (wtf, inside Durgan's Battery? Did the dwarves used to camp in their halls?), rest and food bonuses, use of skills like survival, unics that are not (because of the crafting system), the whole crafting system (which is the absolute worst part of the game to me), overpowered items, soulbounds items (ugly visuals that are wayyyy over the top), lack of many necessary NPC in Caed Nua, arbitrary limit of 8 guards in Caed Nua (are erls limited to 8 guys in their army, too?), the telepatic stuff in Caed Nua, encounters that will always result in a nonsensical fight (especially in WM), the fact that companions will agree to everything from goodie-2-shoes stuff to mass murdering without much of a consequence, the fact that Itumaak (which is fox!) strikes harder than my heavy hitters,... and dozens and more dozens other things...

Holy crap, what does it take for you to not like a game, if you're willing to put up with a laundry list of issues like this?

  7. First of all, I don't quite get the game. I've played much of DnD or Obsidian games, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I somewhat prefer Obsidian to other RPG studios like Bioware or Bethesda and The Sith Lords are one of my most favoured RPGs of all time. I've played BG2 + ToB(only beating ToB due to a lucky Energy Disc while under Boon of Lathander-a terribly OP combo), KoTOR 1 + 2(1 is much, much too emo for me), NWN 1(only OC) + 2(OC + MotB) and DA:O when it comes to games like this.

Now, I can't find a suitable class. The one I wanted to play(support | defensive Chanter) is...well, I hate how Ancient Memory works, let's leave it at that, ok? So, I can't really find what interests me. Plus I've this lingering feeling of blandness. See, I managed to go to Defiance(but was underleveled at level 4 and 3 / 4? /shrug) Bay, but the story didn't hook me. In GV...or shall I name it Charwood, you've cousins(khm! Brothers, yes) and that **** doesn't interest me(unless told like in NWN 1). The whole philosophical nature of PofE doesn't really interest me. I also kinda severely dislike micromanagement. I'd really LOVE to play @normal ToI(or Hard /shrug), but not have to worry about the Vancians(they're braindead and the need to micro them just pushes me towards melee heavy group). Aloth is simply boring and Durance is...I don't know why he hasn't got involved with Raedric with that mentality of his(horrible ugh). Long story short, I SUICIDED because the game was boring me.

I...just don't get it(and by all rights, I SHOULD, but then again I wasn't exactly crying for BG / ID 3...KoTOR though ;) ). Is it just me or is a game just a philosophical allegory for something(here I'll agree with rpg codex when they say it's "plato for newbies") with a bland combat?

I was pumped as hell for this game (and pledged mucho dineros) but when it finally came out, my reaction was decidedly 'Meh'. And while I own the expansion(s), I've yet to play through that content. The thought of slogging through the game again just makes me shudder.

So, it's probably just not resonating with you. No big deal. Just wait for Obs' next game.

  8. I'm new to GOG, and I might be missing something really obvious, but these patch updates are confusing me.

So I have the 3.02 version of Pillars and both parts of The White March installed. I was manually downloading the 3.02 > 3.03 patch updates (15mb for main game, 3mb for each of the expansion parts) on regular GOG. Then I opened GOG Galaxy and a download of 2.3Gb started automatically.

    The dumb questions:

1- Am I downloading the same thing in both regular GOG and GOG galaxy? If so, how come the big difference in size?

2- Does GOG Galaxy's update work for the game in general or just when I launch it with GOG Galaxy?

3- Do I need to download and install the updates for the main game and each part of the expansion separately? In any specific order?

Sorry if these questions have already been answered elsewhere and if its a little bit off topic. Thanks

    1) Yeah likely the same thing. If memory serves (I don't use Galaxy), the files DLed by Galaxy are not compressed.

    2) It works if you use Galaxy. Otherwise, it leaves the game alone.

    3) Not sure on this. The whole thing seems a bit convoluted to me as well. I tend to use the GOG DLer, and there are no separate installers for the expansion in the DLer links.

If I find out anything further, I'll try to update you.

  9. Oh one more thing, having now killed a big dragon.

If you show a roomful of gold and tell it's a vast, immense pile of wealth....

    ... I'd expect a bit more than 86gp.

LOL - I actually have that as a pet peeve. Just played through Gothic 2 for the first time (yeah, yeah, I know - late to the party) and I had the same thought with the dragon hoards: you see shining piles of gold, gems, weapons, and armor but you can't pick all that stuff up. Dragon hoards are legendary. I understand that if the devs actually put a hoard like you'd expect in the game it would totally break the economy, but come on - at least a couple pieces of nice kit and a good hoard of gems/gold.
