  1. If you want the STEAM copy, get the STEAM copy... If you want DRM free, get the DRM free. Since you seem to like STEAM I have no idea why you would want the DRM free too.

What if Steam changes in the future? What if I want to play Project Eternity while Steam is downloading or while someone else is playing another game? What if I haven't got the internet at that moment to install the game from Steam?

Then just get the GoG version. I still don't see why you would need both.

EDIT: When picking a service you have to take the good with the bad.

  2. Could have it be like Night Angel Trilogy where magic is utilized in different ways based on some sort of inner capacity. In those books people could store energy from sunlight in a reservoir and depending on outflow control what they can do with it and to what degree. Exceptional warriors usually had a very small reservoir but they could use the energy at a very high rate with little control over how it is used... so during they day they could fight with super-human ability... especially if scantily clad/nude. Traditional mage types usually had a large reservoir but only able to trickle out energy in a small stream. The low volume of energy is a lot easier to manipulate for doing all kinds of things.

  3. Perhaps a character's soul is shaped by the actions they perform?

A self-sacrificng character would have a different 'flavor' of soul than a selfish one?

A character that commits random or violent acts has a soul that is 'cracked'?

Lots of ways that could go.

edit: I am not talking about a morality system... just the soul functioning differently when stressed continuously in certain ways.

  4. Since rumors of the Wheel of Time were mentioned... the details about the protagonists plight really parallel that series.

Are people bound to the cycle of souls?

Can they control and develop the manifestation of power or does the soul naturally reveal its true nature the more it is exposed to stress?

Is there reincarnation or just a random chance or the gravitation of soul bits from a prior manifestation collecting in unusually high concentration due to a tendency for a soul to want to 'heal' itself or like a smart metal it will try to realign the bits that fit together in a pattern that was shaped by a 'prior' strong soul?

If a person puts extreme stress on their soul by expending powerful magic does it break apart and reassemble in a possibly different way leading to a loss of sense of self and possibly insanity as it ries to emulate its familiar pattern through a different structure? kind of like seperating the sounds in a note and reassmebling them but not quite how it the original resonated so it sounds a bit... off

Can a soul remain immortal as long as it can find a suitable 'shell' to contain the bits so they do not disassociate and be replaced into a new mortal body?

Would a body with weak soul lack the capacity to attract and incorporate a powerful soul into itself? Does it take a powerful soul to sort of draw in those bits as if they are powerful magnets?

Would broken souls and soul bits try to fit back into a soul that is similar to its past environment or would they seek a more stable and complete soul that has just enough room for them?

Can the presence of a strong soul be felt by other strong souls? by those with weak souls? with virtually no soul? and the other way around?

Can souls only feel the resonance of similar formations? A good person can sense good in others? Souls of chaotic, destructive power feel the unbridled chaos in others?

Is there an 'anti-soul' that can negate magic while near a person? Can the two opposite energies be combined into a neutral soul that is strong, yet inert? Does one consume the other or is it like exact opposite sound waves that cancel each other out? Would a person die if their soul is 'neutralized'?

    bah... i am rambling now.

  5. I actually like Steam and am surprised to see so many who dislike it here; it doesn't actually require you to be online to play your games (hint: there's an option called "offline mode"). That said, I am pleased to hear Obsidian will be releasing it on Steam since I'm generally opposed to exclusivity and figure more diversity in options is always good.

And of course, GOG is a great service itself (picked up PS:T and TW2 from it myself) and just as worthy of attention as Steam.

In my case... severe system instability due to malware DRM has made me nerd rage and burn all of my games that use it... except my STEAM games. I try to avoid Steam when I can because I just don't want any DRM.

  6. There, now we see the point of this thread. You see, I'm pretty much the opposite of that - you can't put a value on a life so you can't compare two lives and just say one is objectively more valuable. I want to see how Obsidian will include things like this, differeing viewpoints but you can't really outright state that either of them are a "Good" option, or that either are exactly Evil.

You can put value on life. Everybody does that, all the time, but denies it. A researcher working in CERN is far more valuable, than a wife beater pissing himself in front of a TV in a drunken stupor. Angela Merkel is worth more than a random warlord in Somalia.

There are also historical examples, such as the "Women and children first" policy that contributed to the atrociously high male fatality rate during the Titanic disaster.

There are many, many more examples. We speak of equality, but we do not practice it. It's impossible.

The government puts a monetary value on all citizens lives. It is the basis for determining safety regulations in vehicles. If the cost of life is less than the cost of implementing safety features/measures then they let people die.

  7. In my opinion, closing off content as a consequence of your actions is, by far, the worst penality that can be levied in a game and should only be used as an absolutely last resort. Much better is to offer alternative content that is equivilent (at least in terms of play time & word count) for all options. Of course, that's more expensive, but frankly very few game players are going to be hardcode enough roleplayers to not want to see as much content as they can on each playthrough -- and, as a consequence, they will complain that their character type (whatever it may be) is getting screwed over. This is less of an issue with evil characters, as it is commonplace for evil characters to be treated like this, but good characters are never obligied to sacrifice to follow their moral path, and I'm quite certain that they would complain lots and lots and lots if this situation arose.

See the discussion on this thread for examples. :)

Choices and consequences - There should be an effect for everything the player does. The degree of magnitude of the effect is determined by what they determine should happen for the stories. People should stop trying to 'win' a decision and just roll with the punches. I used to be a perfectionist like that, but after a decade it is just too much work for an artificial reward. The world isn't as compelling if you know everything that is going to happen with subsequent characters. If no decisions make any significant and lasting impact on what the character experiences the worth of choices diminishes. If all choices have drastic changes in content as a consequence players will be probably spend too much time analyzing options and that should be avoided as well. Variety is the spice of virtual life.
