*snogs Jaesun* yay!

Its ok, takkie. They were only cyber tears. So by your def I guess I am an alt of my rl person, but not an alt of my lair persona. I'll buy that...but only for a dollar.
-
i am an alt? *cries*

silly silly taks! if that was true every message board name would always be an alt of your first one. that's goofy! *snogs taks* :D

What's with developers' obsession with D&D?
Slowtrain replied to Macolio's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
technically SPECIAL is: Strength Perception Endurance Charisma Intelligence Agility Luck and nothing else. -
hahaha silly people. its not an alt if its at a different board. but yes, i post at missy's under different guise than you see me here.
-
hehe its funny seeing all the lairites logging in but refusing to post anywhere except this thread. Except Hell Kitty of course, but he is a shameless hussy which is why I love him so.

Despite the advice of many the devs swore that there would be no need for a pause feature in lionheart. hahahahaha. morons. -
If missy's doesn't come back soon I will be overwhelmed by RL in a grotesque and hideous manner. already these week I've actually paid some bills and went to the park and out on a few dates. scawy,

Ehhh, seeing jm post on a dweeby corporate board like this is bizarre.

Actually, my therapist says I have problems visualizing abstract spaces. Maybe that's the reason.

I dunno, SP. There's something about rotating about in a circle that doesn't work for me as well as choosing striahgt off a drop down menu. Maybe its only familiarity though. <_<
-
I don't do real well with circles. I prefer straight lines and 90 degree angles. Cleaner and simpler.

What's with developers' obsession with D&D?

I would get that Madcat in the early mission (was it the very first mission?) about half the time without paying particular attention to whether I wanted to salvage it or not. If I did, great. If not, it really didn't matter. The game wasn't very hard. The only really hard mission was that stupid one where you had to protect the farm. Until I figured out to use a minelayer to cover the approaches that mission really pissed me off. I hate missions like that. -

targeting in RT should be pretty easy to implement though. Just hold down a selection key while using the attack key. It means you have to use a second hand, but if you need to drink a health potion, you're probably too busy to be targetting somebody's groin anyway. I don't think I ever used targeting in Mechcommander. I just bleew the crap out of the mechs and hoped for the best when it came to salvaging their smoking wrecks. Sometimes I would ease up and just hit a single short range laser if I could tell it was close to death so I didn't render it completely unsalvagable. Targeting would have been more useful in MC if the game had been harder and actually required it. -
Radial action menus are high on my list of most annoying game GUI affectations ever. It was almost enough to kill PS:T for me totally. But not quite.

I agree that much of what Jag 2 did was done very well. I do have issues with the way the stats were balanced, how easy/difficult they were to raise vs how important they were. I disliked the learn-by-doing implemenation of stat gain. The combat AI could have used some more work, although its not hideous. Small isues though. Overall, I would certainly give the game an "A" as I would Fallout (but not FO2). A direct XCOM/Jag 2 comparison is difficult because they are at their heart much different games. But as far as implementing squad-based tactical combat in TB mode, they are both excpetional examples that I never tire of playing.

It was completely ridiculous that the Lionheart devs had to be dragged kicking and screaming just to put in a limited pause function. I suppose it can be really hard to eat crow in such a vast amount, wot? -
I'm curious by what measure the IE was a good engine. SUre it powered some good games, but the engine was inflexible and difficult and the devs hated it.
-
Well, I don't know if I could call it the best game *ever*. Certainly, along with XCOM, its one of the best games of its *type* ever. Not that there isa reall ymuch competition. The last I heard, which was a while ago, was that the plan with Jag 3 was to make it more of a crpg and less of a tactical combat game. Oh, and make it realk time and 3d, too.

The problems with Lionheart had nothing to do with SPECIAL. Lionheart was a hugely flawed game because of the developers who made it. No matter how good the rule system, and I agree with Visc that SPECIAL is one of the superlative crpg rule systems, incompetent design will still kill a game. -

But the funny thing SP is that so many DMs the world over manage to run interesting campaigns using the D&D source material. CRPG designers seem unabale to tap into this creativity for whatever reaon. Part of it is no doubt a result of limitations imposed by WoTC since a crpg is a "licensed" product for D&D. PArt of it of course is also that a cpu cannot replace am experienced and skilled DM in creating and working a campaign on the fly. Which of course is why most D&D games arew dungeon hacks, because that's what the CPU does best. Which is of course why D&D should not be used in crpgs. It is really a shame about Jeff because I really wanted to see how JE was going to function within the D&D limitaions. -
well, i will hope that strategy first will develop and set a realsitic sales goal figure for a potential Jag 3 and develop the game within those finicial limitations. They have a much better chance of making a profit off a Jag3 if they don't try to turn it into the "next big thing". There is certainly a decent size audience out there, especially in Europe, for a new Jag game, and since we've all benn playing a 640*480 game for the last 4 years, we're pretty ease to please from a devleopment pov. Really, making a new Jag game should be a slamdunk. I am quite sure however that strat first will ef it up.
