  1. Did you even read the first sentence, Mr Apparently-fanboy-is-my-favorite-word?

Look I have nothing against you, but if you take a step back and look at this thread and just read with an objective eye, you will start laughing, trust me.

You don't get the thread do you. (Most) of the members here made a joke about it. It isn't about a conspiracy. It is just a point out to all the bashing it gets.

For critic points that many other games have too who are way higher ranked.

Of course, there "could" be someone who is thinking about an actualy conspiracy, but I see nobody particular in this thread.

  2. As I said before, if this were a everyday thing, I wouldn't be impressed... but so far it is the first time that after all that criticism this "person" comes and do such comments, why it didn't happen on the days of KOTOR2? when the game is regarded as unfinished...

Maybe he wasn't on the team during the KOTOR2 days.

Maybe he thought that the game turned out well in spite of the limited timeframe, so he didn't feel like he had to defend the team. Maybe he's still bitter at Chris Parker for scrapping his many suggestions to fix the gameplay.

    Who knows?

I'm not arguing that what the guy did was professional or even just intelligent.. I'm just arguing that it could be true, and given the possibility, I, as a journalist, would publish it in a news.

    As simple as that.

As for 'hurting sales', let's be honest, I doubt that this comment will hurt sales, if anything, it will be the major gaming sites review that are lukewarm at best that will hurt the game sales.

That's a lot of maybes and a lot of speculation.

The problem with speculation is, what you seem to ignore, that it can easily manipulate people.

Thats also how an image of Obsidian comes into peoples minds that doesn't have to be true.

That IS dangerous for a company. Regardless of the topic.

And I don't think it should be in a magazine because that is on the level on any sensational paper.

Also for the third time. The world isn't just america. If you believe it or not. Most european reviewers gave it favorable reviews and I can see it sell well, at least over here.

  3. I don't think anyone argued that what that dev did was professional, but it seems that, since some of you like the game a lot, you're totally discarding the possibility of it being true.

With no word did we say it couldn't be true (at least in the last few posts)

Hell, I don't think development on ANY game goes without drama.

And the problem isn't a campagin AGAINST Alpha Protocol (Honestly, I would accept any score between 75-85). It's that in comparison to other overhyped games (including RDR, Fallout 3,.... list goes on) problems are blown out of proportion. Especially since in these games similiar problems are considerd "minor".

Well, anyway I'm happy with the reviewers in my country. (Which were all around ~80)

  4. I suppose the best way to read the comment, which I am inclined to believe is coming from someone in house, is that this game was a disappointment for the team as well. That it was the victim of upper management and a bumbling publisher. Most importantly, that their other projects are going better than they would have hoped. At this point, you just have to hope the same mistakes don't happen again.

Well, I still isn't a valid excuse. I don't go around to the customers of my former employer and tell them "Work sucked, don't buy the product". (And I really hated one. Believe me)

It's an enormusly dickish move even when the reason behind it is understandable.

And from the comments I read from the designers (Including from twitter and a guy at the something awful forums) they seem rather proud of it and what they have done.

And why "as well". It wasn't a disappointment for everyone. There are many people who are happy how it turned out and love playing it.

  5. The point I'm trying to make is that we'll never know the truth about this game's development cycle for at least some years, so it's pointless to jump to conclusions.

True, though it is to expect that some sort of drama always happens. Its just a normal workplace like any other.

It's still not nice to attack them, though.

  6. To be fair, according to gamerankings.com and European review sites, the reviews both on North American soil and abroad are fairly consistent.

Wait what? Here in germany there wasn't one major game magazine that gave it under a 80. I looked over most european review sites (including french, finnland, swedish, polish, spain, and and and) and the scores of ~80 were way in the majority. That's a difference to the 60-70 ones in America.

  7. What version of those games were you playing? I never once had issues in ME/2, Oblivion, or Fallout3.

You guys can attempt to justify or rationalize your purchase all you want by talking **** about great games, but the truth of the matter, and what you need to REALIZE, is that AP has some serious issues. I know it makes your fanboy powers weak to admit it, but AP just isn't that great of a game. Sure, it has it's moments(trust me it's fun at times), but it has TOO many bugs IMO to offset those issues.

Here's the irony of your comment.

You criticize Deus Ex Machina because "you didn't have any issues with ME1/2, Oblivion, or Fallout 3."

It's possible that people don't have issues with Alpha Protocol too. I haven't found any bugs yet (but it's still early for me).

    Huh?

Where did I criticize Deus Ex? That's in my top 5 games of all time

He did mean the USER "Deus Ex Machima"

Also Deus Ex? Really? Well, your just ignoring here that Deus Ex has many of the same complaints as Alpha Protocol. MANY. At release it mostly got a rating of 80-85 and it wasn't seen as a polished game. Its one of my favourite games though, too.

I see here a very different fanboy.

  8. The opinion split on this game is remarkable.

I read one post and I feel like, yeah, all right, sounds good, I'll get it tomorrow. Then I read the next post and I'm like, yeah, all right, sounds like a potential POS, I'll pick it out of the bargain bin in a few months for 1/3 the price.

    meh.

Considering its Obsidian when wasn't it. There are most of these issues but they are exterrageted. They are not worse than in most other Games. So, if you don't go into a negative mindset into this game there is a good chance you will like it.

  9. The whole game is a sham, covering up a farce designed to trick you into playing a lie. You have no control, there is no choice. Everything is going to happen regardless of what you do and how you do it.

    1. That's just not true. There are several things that change largly and its impact on world stability and the characters based on what you do.

These are just two things I wanted to say since the choice thing is just not true. Every gamer who played this twice and differently can tell you that.

So, give it another go at least or watch some playthroughs.

Edit 1: Revised originally statement since that was a little too opinion based.

  10. I thought you need to unlock hard to play it. am i wrong or someone is lying?

No, you don't. As for Veteran. It isn't exactly harder. quite the opposite. lets you start with way more skillpoints than the others.

As for the OP. I can only give you the advise with changing things manually. Though, your a pretty high level player. Alpha Protocol on Hard/Recruit is harder for me than any of the ME's.

  11. Seems to me like a troll wouldn't have a couple of hundreds of messages in his post count on the developer's boards.

Granted, he could have explained his reasons better, but attacking him as a troll and barring him from borrowing some points from reviews (why anyway? if the points are valid, why does it matter that they come from reviews?), but your attack seems gratuitous to me.

I attacked him as a troll because of these reasons

    - He listened exactly no reasons what is so godawful about the game. (Excpect referencing the hacking minigame again by giving no reason)

    - Purpose of this thread is clouded. That it gets better is basicaly said everywhere. What is his question? Was he just so disappointed in the game? If so, what exactly is wrong? would be nice to get this topic over "simple bashing"

I could list more. Point is. At the moment this fills most of the criteria of a troll thread. It doesn't matter how many posts you have as long as there is no substance to his words this thread is a troll thread.

If he comes with reasons that are disscusable I will immediatly take back my statement.

  12. If you don't want to troll. Give actual reasons that don't sound they could be taken from any review.

what the hell do you mean by that? if a review is complaining about something then i can't use that specific complaint but must come up with a new one?

anyhow, i've been buying games made by AP devs for more than a decade, and so far this game is the only one i wish i hadnt bought...

my judgement might be clouded by the severe mouse issues i'm having though

Nope, you don't give any issues. Exculding technical ones that don't even happen by every user. Not to mention. NO ONE really critized the concept of the hacking minigame. It's because the control sucks on pc. On consoles its passable but it could be better.

Other reasons regarding actual story/gameplay you have given none. I highly doubt that you are even in possession of the game.

So, until you proof otherwise. You are in every meaning of the word a troll.

  13. I'm not trying to troll here but the game is god awful so far.

I've never been this inclined to quit a black isle or bioware game after just 40 minutes. However, I did read somwhere that it gets better...

and what were you thinking with the hacking mini game? seriously?

props for retro style animations and random running around of enemies though, funny as hell.

If you don't want to troll. Give actual reasons that don't sound they could be taken from any review.

Because, you don't list any reasons. The only thing you say is "godawful"

You, sir at the moment. You are a troll. :sorcerer:

  14. That, to say. Any game has mistakes. I haven't met one "masterpiece" yet. Most excel at one particular element (which Alpha Protcol does) So Its possible to say its a masterpiece of some sort.

For example: There are many people saying Heavy Rain is a masterpiece which is a lie. It does its job well but there are fundemental elements that are flawed. One beeing that David Cage can't write women characters. Or any form of attraction whatsoever.

Which is more than a valid complaint since stoy is the main gameplay element moreso than Alpha Protocol.

  15. I finish my first play thru just below 8 hours. I did all side quest possible and I took a stealth gadget approach. If you go in gun blazing, you will finish this in 6. This game truly is lacking in lifespan. You might be able to try out different dialog options / handlers stuff like that, but thats just going to be another 8 hours (exluding the same stuff you went thru). 16 hours is pretty short, for 2 play through is short, and I doubt the replay value of trying different appoarch, because of them are minor.

And the endings were too short to warrant another play thru just to see them.

Wait, what? Under 8 hours??????? All objectives etc.?

I just did half a speedrun and I was still well over 8.

Also differences aren't minor but quite heavy, actually. You can play through the game without even noticing important Plotpoints etc.

    I smell troll. ;)

  16. I realise that there are plenty of threads for discussion of people's views on the game, but I have never been moved to start a thread on a forum to praise a game before. Feel free to lock/delete/pour scorn as needed.

The writing, the spiderweb of a story, the acting, the choices - it is seminal work. For the first couple of hours I felt that the combat was the weak link, but once I levelled up the mechanics started to come into play and it became clear how well realised they are.

This game is superior, in every department that matters, to ME2.

    Obsidian: Take a bow.

Not in every department that matters since ME2's gameplay is quite different than AP.

If we just go by story. Yeah AP wins. It sure as hell not some deep lifequestioning thing like PT. But it is a spy story. And a DAMN good one at that. Including Characters which seem cheesy at first sight, but actually are deep without beeing over the top. (Expect for Russian Guy. But even he was passable)

  17. By the way, the dialogue countdown could have been a little bit less short. I like that you have a countdown, but I'm not a native English speaker so some times I must read the subtitles (unfortunately, the voices weren't translated into Spanish). I could use some more time to choose my answer, I don't know, one or two seconds after the NPC has finished talking. Oh, and the method to fast forward a conversation (mouse click) should be different than the method to choose an answer. More than one time I've seen the next bit of dialogue "fast forwarded" due to me choosing an option a little too late.

Now that I think about it I'll check if I can change it in the ...

Well, there would be even more subtitles. They are clearly the wakpoint of the game. But I'm entirely biased since I'm swiss but I can understand perfectly englisch. Hell, I even learned japanese for jrpg purposes. Call me crazy. It would be nice if they could add a patch where you can toggle this option. Because I would NOT like to lose it. Conservations are EXTREMLY fluid and sound surperp thanks to the system. A shame SEGA didn't engage more localization groups with voice actors.

  18. - Now we're approaching the worst aspects. For a spyonage game it's too unrealistic. I hit a guy with two fire grenades, multiple shotgun shots from less than two meters and many punches and kicks and he's still alive and kicking? WTF?! And he doesn't even have an armor! I didn't know cocaine was a god mode. And that can be said abut most "bosses". Lame.

    - And the worst for me. I HATE with a passion save checkpoints! This isn't the 80s anymore, I have gigabytes of space to store as many savegames as I want. Why can't I save anyplace in the game? I Should be the one deciding how to play the game I've bought, not whoever designer has decided to put this crappy feature! I tend to quicksave a lot, I hate to redo parts of the game I've just done and done well, and this game forces me to do so. If I'd know about this feature I'd have choosen normal difficulty instead of hard. Ugh!

Have to disagree with these two

    1. The checkpoint system is because of the conversations. It basically forces the player more onto choices & consequences. Which is a good thing in my opinion. Especially for a game like this. You can save anytime and there are many checkpoints. Most of the time it isn't even a 1 Minute walk.

    2. Unrealistic? You want to know what real espionage is like? Well, expect beeing placed at ta location for over a year, 90% Deskwork etc. etc. There is more action in Wartimes. But most of the time, this is one hell of a desk job. Also, yes the bosses are bad. Could have been done better. I agree.

But that has nothing to do with "realistic" for an espionage. See it more as gameplay.

(Though AP is the most coherent Spy Story I have ever seen in video game, considering the scale probably even movies. Its top :sorcerer: )

  19. I so can't wait to get my hands on this game. Who knows maybe a small team will come together and 'finish' the game like some people did with KOTOR II.

On the topic of comparing to Deus Ex.... it certainly sounds like Alpha Protocol is this generations version of Deus Ex... from waht I'm hearing

The game IS complete, they included again (like in KOTOR2) some UE3 Data that indicated different things planned but they are mostly concept stuff. Mostly just audiodata. That doesn't indicate that it's not finished just that stuff was cut (Like in the development of every game ever. In days of DLC the people seem to have forgotten that and blame publishers as soon as they announce DLC. (KOTOR 2 or similiar beeing a special case)

As for adjusting stuff. Yeeeeah! But it's UE3. Just don't hope for too much.

  20. It's not that it's hard at the start, because it isn't. It's just that the tutorial doesn't really explain the skill points too well, so you have to get used to missing even though you're hitting, if you know what I mean. Once you accept that, it actually works very well.

It's also the little things that annoy you at the start, like the not hiding bodies, and the bad A.I (not so little). Once the story kicks in and your character moves on a bit you start to ignore the little annoyances and enjoy the things it does right.

I still think the lead voice over actor is awful.

If they make a sequel, it should be amazing. If they sort out the little problems and up the graphics beyond 2003.

Well, I can't argue with the hiding bodies since splinter cell probably made that standard. It would be a great improvement in a sequel. The voice actor is probably opinion since I like how he speaks rather "normally". As for the other points. They were waaaaay worse for me on Fallout 3. But, thats usually ignored for some reason in that game.

And as for the graphics. They aren't that bad. It has some great textures though the animations are. But, especially concering graphics:

I have yet to encounter ANYTHING that looks worse than Mass Effect 1's planets and their buildings.

    There: I said it.

  21. The reviews that are favorable seemed to understand that it is an RPG, while the ones that hated on it seemed to be frustrated that it does not play like Gears of War.

This is nonsense. They're reviewing it as a GAME, and as a game, it is fairly janky and frustrating a lot of the time because of bad AI, camera, weak gunplay, etc, regardless of how many points you have in a weapon skill or stealth. If they were reviewing just the RPG elements or the story, well no **** it would be getting more praise. Thankfully these reviewers don't believe that story>gameplay.

Yeah, because all games should be exactly the same soon so we can all enjoy unoriginal boring streamline world.

    That's so much better

  22. I hated this game at the start, but now I love it. It's such a wierd game. I have never known a game to have such a rubbish start and put you off. The tutorial for me, was utter crap, but now 6 hours or so in and I think it's brilliant.

A LOT of people feel this way, hell I can't remember in recent memory the last time a tutorial was ever done right.

It just seems that AP really dropped the ball at the beginning but thankfully picked it up after.

My theory is that the low stats at the beginning contribute to the annoyance. (constant missing with weapons, low stealth, etc.)

Actually, the only thing that I have to say to those people is. Don't play hard or recruit. I did my first run on easy and I had no problem with Saudi. I actually completly enjoyed it.

  23. I really don't see how you could compare it to Deus Ex(one of the greatest games of all time) at all.

Yeah, because Deus Ex was such a flawless game when it came out. It's not like it was universally critizied too for its animations and KI and the biggest reason it wasn't more panned is because the reviewers weren't as high standard as today.......

    Oh wait!

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/deusex/revi...view&page=2

It's rosa colored glasses time. ;)

    Let us rejoice!

Seriously people! Shut up! If you have to bash the game so hard you are only deluding yourself. I myself wait a few years and get a good laugh when people say Alpha Protocol was a hidden gem.
