  1. Isn't this similar to asking: "What's the difference between playing as a Mage with a Cleric in the party and playing a Cleric with a Mage in the party?"
Quite possibly, but that's not a defense. If every RPG jumped off a bridge, would Mass Effect?

No, it's more just you not having a clue.

Who would have thought that having two characters with their classes reversed wouldn't result in any significant differences in the execution of those classes.

Mine might not be a defense, but that's more because yours wasn't a valid criticism.

On the run through I stopped I didn't level up my group, but couldn't you level up the characters differently so that they have different strengths and weaknesses as well? I was playing a warrior who only used his shotgun, so the design was built around close quarter combat.

  2. I had been playing ME for a while. and I really like it. It looks great, and has excellent cinematic feel to it (what Bioware is good at these days), but I put it on hold for a while until I receive my new system that I can really ramp up the graphics and have a blast.

I'll probably go for an adept or the adept/soldier combot...maybe an infiltrator.

  3. If Sten was the M/M option, I'm pretty sure the roles would be reversed in that male love pic.

He could be a power bottom. I wouldn't rule anything out, it is a dark and gritty fantasy after all.

Yup. And power bottoms generate all the power. Speed is the name of the game.

  4. The following games will be unlocked on Steam (and I'm guessing other stores, digital or otherwise) in the next 1 to 4 weeks:

    Borderlands (5 days)

    Torchlight (6 days)

Dragon Age (1 week, 6 days)

    Left 4 Dead 2 (3 weeks, 6 days)

I only post this because I was personally surprised that all these guys were about to be released and figured others might like to know.

I guess that answers my question in the DA thread. I imagine DA will be available via D2D or some other digital distribution system? (I got Mass Effect from EA, so I'd imagine so).

  5. Jesus H. Christ on a freaking bicycle!

This game is a co-op dream. I played 8 hours yesterday with a friend, we played as Mordecai(me) and Lilith, eschewing Brick and Roland for a later playthrough and let me tell you; this game grabs you by the nuts. BY THE NUTS, I daresay. It's a gun-fetishist's dreamland, with tons of gaming references, eerie Mad-Max ambiences, honest hack'n'slash gameplay and great on the fly-tactical scenaries thrown together to form a strong adventure feel in a large quasi-open world. And it's full of humour and makes Fallout 3 look and feel like your ugliest and most taciturn in-law, the one who gets served whiskey at parties and then goes at the guest with a knife.

I love how it doesn't hold your hand after the beginning, higher-level mobs are complete murder to take on, but doable with ludicrous special attack use and lots of cover. The areas are interesting and the scope feels so vast, yet they've taken the trouble to put something into every nook and cranny that it never feels empty. At parts the game feels like someone took the Highway 17 level from HL2 and just decided to let the player wander off from the beaten path. No one cares about combine anyway.

All things said, it does have its problems as well. Probably the most dire one is respawning. I imagine it will get borderline infuriating once tedium starts to set in. It's frequent and follows no logic(a cleaned base filling up with goons again once you spent enough time in the innermost chamber fighting the boss mobster) and while it does make the world feel less empty, the frequent attacks on road stops are annoying. You are almost constantly on your toes. Another issue is the skill tree, it requires some metagaming to get the most out of it. Never did I realise, until an avid fan pointed it out, that you have to spend 5 points into the skills of first tier of one skill branch before you gain the next tier. This also, along with the later higher costs(10 to gain the next tier, fifteen to get the last one), seems to result in very specialized characters. Have to play more(14 level Hunter right now) to see this issue come to fruition first though.

    Lovely game, i want moar

I plan on getting this for PC. how would it fair as a single player game? Any idea on the supposed length of the game?

  6. If you find a house that mostly needs cosmetic work to make it liveable/what you'd personally be happy to live in - no plumbing, no major electrical, no square footage additions, the foundation is solid, etc...just paint, furniture, new appliances, carpet/flooring, new toilet/sink you install over the pipe, that sort of thing, that's not so bad, and I'd say go for it.

Everything is structurally sound, as far as I know. It would be all new appliances, paint, flooring, etc.

Then like I said...sure, why not. Heck, even a brand new house, people often change out the flooring, paint and appliances etc. to suit their personal tastes. If those simple things make it livable for you, you can then move in and worry about/consider any major work/changes one at a time, at a later date.

That's what I was thinking. It needs a water heater, and I really want one of those tankless coiled water heaters. I hear they're great energy savers.

  8. Now is a fantastic time to buy, no doubt about it. Being a first time home buyer, you are also eligible for 8k from the government in incentives. I wouldnt go for a rehab unless you really know what your doing. A guilty pleasure of mine is watching rehab/flip shows on TV and universally costs triple and schedules fall behind if you dont know exactly what youre doing.

I know now is a great time to buy, that's why I've been tossing the idea about. My plan was to get the house, and get it fixed up before I move into it a little bit at a time. I'm in no need or hurry to move (living in an aptartment right now).

  9. I'm really just looking around purely for interests, sake. Not saying I going to act, one way or another. But I was looking around, and there is a home near me for sale, that's in a nice semi-secluded area, yard isn't too big or too small. It's roughly 1000 sq ft. (924 to be exact). It is essentially gutted, so I would need to renovate and furnish it completely. I was just wondering if anyone here knew about what it would cost to do something like this, if anyone has any experience.

Just thought I'd throw this out there while I was bored sitting at work, hehe.

  10. I can get Windows 7 Home Premium through my university for $30 even though I graduated in 07 :brows:

I'll probably go ahead and pick it up since that's a pretty good deal.

  11. I know how hard it can be to wait a lil' while longer once you have given in to the hardware side, but I'd recommend waiting awhile (longer) deciding on a gfx as AMD is on the verge of introducing their next generation of ATi graphics cards (EyeFinity'n stuff) in a few days or months or at the same time as Win7, in any case it's close. Maybe you'll not be on that wagon, but it seems very likely that it'll put extra pressure on Nvidia's prices.. All though I'm not sure how much you can squeeze a lemon, before it turns to dust..

True, but I'm needing this soon (I could possibly hold off, though), because I'm going to be doing a video project for my brother and my first niece, and since my last desktop died on me - I believe it's the PSU, but the MB could be fried, for all I know...it won't turn on, at least.

I'm probably going to go with the DELL and the GTX 285 for a bit more money. One reason is that I have financing through dell, and I'd rather not plop down the large sum of money all at once. Two, I've always had great customer service experience with Dell even though I know a lot of others haven't. They've earned my money.

  12. Three things:

    1) The SLI solution: you are combining two weak cards, thus getting the worst of two worlds. Together they are not stronger than a powerful card, but they cost as much. Some games won't support SLI so you'll be forced to run on one from time to time, which will accentuate that they're low range. I'd go for one GTX 275 or an ATI 4890.

    2. The amount of RAM: How do you even get 6 GB? Three 2 GB sticks? Anyhow, 4 GB is enough. If you'll ever want to upgrade the amount of RAM, this is the easiest part to do after purchase.

    3) The prize: for that price you really ought to be getting a better build. Or is a screen included that you forgot to mention?

Worth mentioning: I'd personally pay the extra for a 1 TB hard drive. Not because of the storage, but because they also offer better performance.

Those cards are that weak? ah nuts. I'll look into the other options.

The options for ram went up to 8 gb, and I imagine it would be 3 2GB sticks.

There is no monitor. What kind of build can I get for about a grand? Links?

I thought about the 1TB drive, but my old comp was 200GB and I never got near filling it up. It wasn't that much more though so I might still consider it.

  13. Looking to get a new desktop, and since I don't have the time really to give the attention to detail needed to build it from the ground up like last time, I figured I would get another Dell, as I always have.

I was going to get an XPS system, and here's what I came up with for configuration:

Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1) 64-bit, with free Windows 7 Upgrade (I don't know if I'd rather have XP or what)

    Intel

  14. My first ME character was an infiltrator. Enjoyable run. Pop is right about the Sniper being only occasionally useful (and not really of much benefit until you've put significant points in it), but I really didn't find any of the secondary weapon skills to be all that useful-- one of pistol/AR handles everything well enough that you're better off spending the points elsewhere instead of picking up another gun. It was nice to have Shepard take care of unlocking and decrypting, which means that you don't have to take along a techie companion if you don't want to. But Tali and the Birdman are two of the better companions, anyway, so it's no big deal to be tied to having one of them around.

The game is easy enough to be forgiving about character builds, though, and it gives you pretty good information about what the effects are of adding points to each of your skills. Just read what the effects are and conclude for yourself which thresholds are worth aiming for first.

Oh, and play as a female. The VO is infinitely better.

I might just restart as something that uses abilities instead of guns. I just got through a re-run of Half-Life 2, and first run through Episodes 1 and 2 (Very enjoyable, btw), and I've had my fill of gunning around.

Maybe I'll up the difficulty to add some challenge, if it's so easy.

  15. I don't know if you have seen the special limited offer that Microsoft is making: you can now buy Windows 7 at half price. The question is whether we need to upgrade our OS or not. I am pretty happy with XP and it works fine with all of my games. Do I run the risk of encountering problems with my games if I install the new version of windows? Is it worth the risk of purchasing it?

    ramza,

Since you can preorder the new windows for $50, I would defiantly put some cash down on Windows 7. Its worth the risk. If they were selling it for $199 at the start, I would hold off until all the bugs have been fixed.

Where do you get it for only $50? Which edition is it? On MS's website Ultimate is $199.

  16. So I finally bought Mass Effect. It was my second downloaded game purchase (HL: Ep 1 and 2 being the first). I kind of like the digital distribution service, although it's only been because I have nowhere else to get "older" games from.

Anyway, after fixing some SERIOUS performance issues, I've got the game running with most of the bells and whistles and it's running pretty smoothly right now.

I started as an infiltrator, but I was wondering if anybody had any opinions on the different "classes" in the game. Is there one that's underpowered or overpowered? Which one lets you get the most out of the game?

Does anybody else like the film grain filter? I'm not sure if I do. It looks great for cutscenes and dialog, but it looks...off...during regular gameplay. Thoughts?
