  1. I don't care about the shovelware, good stuff floats up to the surface eventually.

But I do agree that Steam feels less than exciting now. New releases are more expensive than ever (much more expensive than boxed retail versions in Sweden), the games keep their initial prices longer (retail is already at half price when several titles are full price on Steam) and the sales seem to be getting worse. That might just be an effect of me already owning all the games I want though.

Still playing Elex. I'm stuck on this stupid puzzle. I can't seem to find pieces 2, 6 and 7 and I've looked everywhere. Which probably means I've been to the places where they are hidden but missed them anyhow.

I managed to find all the photographs on my own, but I am sooo close to using help for these last three pieces. At least I found the Sewer Rats questline while searching for these stupid map pieces, so that was a plus.

  3. Playing The Saboteur. Just got to the open world part I think, seems fun enough to be worth the $7 so far

I loved that game and played it to completion. It does get repetitive after a while, but I still loved it.

I'm still playing Elex and I'm up to the point where I can join any faction I want (and I accidentally destroyed a town on my way there). But I don't want to! I mean, the choices I have are:

Red tapers (berserkers): you get magic but you're bound by rules and laws

Brainwashers (clerics): you get technology but uh.. brainwashing

**** (outlaws): you get freedom but all they care about is profit

These factions almost makes me wish I could go back to being an Alb.

  4. The first few hours of Elex really kicked my ass. I was dying left and right, until I remembered how to play a Piranha Bytes game: run away and exact revenge later. So I've been dodging scary creatures and solving quests (I also forgot that in PB games, quests have a fail state!) and after a while it clicked. Suddenly I was able to take down a raptor.. then a bunch of raptors.. then Albs.. and so on. Not without struggles (I still die from time to time) but I'm getting there. It's sooo satisfying when you notice your character getting stronger. I'm a melee fighter using mainly swords and thinking about joining the assho.. uh outlaws.

Yeah, it's rough and unforgiving and difficult and I wouldn't want it any other way.

  5. Played the first two hours of Elex. Absolutely loving it. The added verticality is something I've been asking for since the original Gothic (which had free-form climbing instead of a jetpack) and it's marvelous. Everything gets another dimension when you can look at it from above.

But holy hell am I rusty! The first thing that killed me? Falling off a cliff. I'm so used to having my hand held that I forgot that some games let you slip off an edge two minutes into the game and punish you with death.

Might not have been my wisest purchase..

Anyhow, installing right now. Will be playing.. in two hours or so after it has chewed through all 5 DVD's.

Oh, and Dying Light is absolutely fantastic and if you wish for faster zombies you're a masochist and need help.

Edit: Christ my desk looks dirty! I swear it looks black in normal light!

  7. An interesting article/interview about ELEX, the new RPG from Piranha Bytes is up over at WCCFtech.

    http://wccftech.com/piranha-bytes-improved-polish-elex/

They talk about how they've tried to polish this game a bit more to reduce the number of bugs (riiight) and that the game world is around 1.5 that of Gothic 3! This is great news for me who loves giant game worlds. Gothic 3 was massive. Bruce will be happy to hear there are romances now..

It launches on October 17. I'm quite looking forward to this game.

  8. I think I may have figured out a way to beat that stupid act 5 end boss in Path of Exile. It might have something to do with over leveling the **** out of my char before even trying again..

It's a level 45 area. My character is level 59 right now. I will still get my butt kicked. Yeah, difficulty balancing is not Grinding Gears strongest side.

If I can get past Kitava (the boss' name) I know I'll have a ton of much easier zones to look forward to.

  9. I bought my last laptop in 2009. After 8 years it couldn't charge more than 20-30% and it would run out in like 10-15 minutes.

I looked up what a new battery would cost. 1500 SEK (~188 USD). Sure, it's cheaper than an entirely new laptop, but.. who the hell would spend that much on an 8 year old computer?

I bought a new laptop for 800 USD instead.

    english-xiaomi-mi-notebook-air-12-5-13-3

It's the silver one to the right. It weighs 1 kg, has around 11-12 hours of battery time, 12.5 inch 1080p IPS screen, full metal body, Core i5-7Y54, 8 GB 1866MHz RAM, 256 GB Samsung SSD, quick charger (30-40 minutes for 50% charge) and AKG speakers (surprisingly good for such a small device). It's perfect for my needs (bedroom/travel laptop for surfing and watching the occasional movie).

It's called the Xiaomi Air 12. Only disadvantage so far was the Win 10 Home version in Chinese. I bought a cheap Win 10 Pro license, got the drivers from Xiaomi's forums and did a complete reinstall. Worked perfectly.

  10.

I'm not playing it, but I'm sorely tempted to give Deadly Premonition a second try. Anyone a fan?

I'm watching Twin Peaks and find myself desiring something similar.

Deadly Premonition is Twin Peaks in video game form. I couldn't handle the gameplay, though. I'm tempted to actually just watch a let's play. The mood was spot on.

Same here. The game was too scary and too.. stiff? I'm not sure what to call it, but everything from the movement of your character to the way cars handle was so off-putting that I just couldn't play it. Interesting atmosphere and game world though.

  11. I bought Ghost Recon: Wildlands in a Eurogamer (!) sale and I've been playing that on and off.

This game is damn good! I have no idea why so many reviewers gave it middling scores. It looks fantastic, you can play through everything in co-op, the world is gigantic (and sooo well made) and the gameplay reasonably varied and fun.

Also, it's so ridiculously polished. Just how menus look and behave, how easy it is to transport yourself and your tram everywhere, how snazzy the weapon modifications look, how the physics affect almost everything (from explosions to fall damage to destructible environments). Everything seems to have an extra layer of thought put into them.

I was wandering through the wilderness, far away from anything, when I found a small path. It wasn't even on the map, but it went up to a vertical cliffside and disappeared into the rock. I got curious and followed the path, and it turned out someone had carved a very realistic looking passage through the cliff so the path could spindle its way up to the top of the cliff. I was so impressed! This must be one of the biggest games ever made and still.. someone took the time to create that little non-mapped path and made it look realistic and cool in the middle of nowhere. I loved that.
