  1. the best musical directors in the indutrsy are the guy from Rareware, Martin O'Donnell (Bungie), and Jesper Kyd (Hitman 1 & 2). IMO

Yeah, I'd also vote for Jesper Kyd. I thought the music in Hitman 2 was the best I had ever heard. Although I also loved the music in Max Payne 2..

  2. Whats wrong with the fall?

Well, I've gone to the forums a few time and Carsten is always asking for fans to contribute ideas. To me, it shows me that ze germans are to lazy to do their own creative work.

Strange. I frequent a lot of game boards, and most of them don't give a flying rat's ass for their fans. Especially Ion Storm, Jowood and Eidos.. So for me it's a sign of greatness when a developer is actually taking time to listen to their fans and even ask for ideas from the community. I mean, after all it is us they're developing the games for. Who else would be better suited to come with constructive critiscism than the most loyal fans?

And I really hope Obsidian turns out to be as community oriented as this Carsten is. I want some feedback from the guys in charge!

  3. Hrmm.. I just took my hotmail nick (which I've had since 1995!) because I am lazy and don't want to remember more than one name. I use this nick everywhere too, because who other than me would ever want such an ugly nickname? And for avatar.. I don't have one! Maybe I'll never have one.. Lazy and all.

Do I win a prize for most boring story? :)

  4. I'm too stupid for IRC. Seriously. I never got the thing running. Also, I ask my mom to turn on my computer in the morning because that On/Off-button scares me.

Anyone interested in more info from the wonderful world of mkreku?

  5. I want a sandbox where I can take any character I choose, and weave a story that will be different each time I play, yet each time have quality writing and interaction with other characters in the game.

You basically want a game that plays like a hundred games. Well, I want that too, but I also realize the limitations in todays hardware and probably the limitations in the budgets of developers forever. It would cost a lot of money and take an awful long time to make a game like that. Not to mention how complex it would have to be.

But that's what I'd like too, only combined with my last post :)

  6. Silver Style has a bad track record, and I dislike some of their ideas for the Fall. We shall see.

Hmm.. Which games and which ideas are you referring to? I am only aware of Gorasul and, although that is an unpolished gem in my eyes, it doesn't say much about their approach to The Fall..

Where did you read about their ideas for The Fall? I'd love to read more about that game!

  7. Hmm.. I usually post at RPGDot, Eidos boards and the place in my signature (swedish) and I was quite happy to find this new Obsidian board. But it seems this place is doomed already, and it hasn't even been open a whole week yet.

Already lots of morons, lots of name calling, lots of huge, ugly signatures.. And apparently lots of people from other boards who think they're "well known" and important.

The world is way too small sometimes.

  8. I've never understood that "we can't send out the beta version to public beta testers" policy. They do know it's possible to hide encrypted messages in code/graphics/music files, right? And they also know it's not very difficult to write a program that adds a small encrypted message to every single downloaded copy of the beta version? Then all they have to do is connect this randomly generated, encrypted message to each and every beta tester they hire, inform the beta testers about their ability to trace which beta tester has which copy and then sue the hell out of any person who lets his/her beta version roam free on the internet.

I mean, all they would have to do was download the pirated beta version from Kazaa or Direct Connect, check the encrypted code and then check their beta testers list to see who spread it.

Oh, and sign me up for those future beta tests too.. :p

  9. The games that are the most fun for me to play and that I still consider to be RPG's are Deus Ex, Gothic/Gothic 2 and System Shock 2. They mix the character development system of any good RPG with the real time action of a FPS. I develop my character to my liking, using my brain, but I play out all his possibilities directly on the screen, through his eyes, using my fingers, reflexes and motorics.

Of course, I really enjoyed Fallout too so I guess turn based combat isn't so bad either..

  10. Too bad signatures tend to become mantras after a while on a board. It's like that same person is saying the same thing over and over and over..

I'm more concerned about the length of the signatures, myself, than what the message in them is. I must admit that messages that are shorter than the signature of the poster can get on my nerves sometimes. But, like in the case of the Deus Ex 2 boards, signatures can also hold valuable information. There's a poster on those boards that has a link to the latest PC mods for Deus Ex 2. So everytime you find a post by that guy you can go check out if the hi-res models have been updated! A great service.

  11. What's wrong with Silver Style and The Fall? I think that game looks very promising, even though the graphics looks a bit.. German.. :p

But it would be really neat if they could buy the Fallout PC license and continue their work. Or why not even buy the old Wasteland license from Interplay and make a sequel to that one instead? It might be cheaper, considering Wasteland came out in.. 1987 or 1988..

  12. My wishlist for KotOR 2:

    1. Bigger world! (I know, this was mentioned in the very first post, but I can't stress this enough).

    2. Ability to switch between real time combat and turn based combat.

    3. Real 3D worlds, where I can look up and down and jump around as much as I want.

  13. Oohh, my chance to build a personal wishlist!

Too bad none of the developers are ever going to read this, but still.. It's fun :)

What I want (and dream about):

    - A huge, free world with lots of explorable special places (Bandit hideouts, hidden treasure caves, abandoned mines, and so on).

    - Believable, interesting NPC's (With spoken dialogue! And several dialogue options, depending on your characters attributes/skills).

    - Day & Night cycle and real weather (Where NPC's sleep during the night and live during the day).

    - Fully interactive 3D world with physics (Rollable barrels, rag doll effects, climbable fences/ladders, jumpable obstacles, fall-to-my-death locations).

    - Upgradable, driveable vehicles (be it horses, boats or cars).

    - Advanced character development, preferrably skill based (Anyone play Wasteland? That's what I want).

    - Well balanced equipment (Fallout: after getting automatic weapons you never lost a fight. Too easy. I want to REALLY fight for the next upgrade to my arsenal. I love to find special, well hidden equipment).

    - Real time combat (Preferrably in FPS style, like Deus Ex/Gothic/Morrowind).

    - 1st or 3rd person view (Preferrably both, switchable).

    - Lone hero style (Not too fond of party based RPG's. I feel more involved as one person instead of a whole gang).

The setting I would choose is the holocaust after a nuclear war. I once read a french comic book that took place in New York after a nuclear war. The heat from all the explosions had melted the polar ices and New York was mostly flooded and people travelled in small boats, rafts or whatever they could find (motorized bathtubs!). New York was mostly a ghost town, with eerie skyscrapers, half broken, leaning against each other, where small groups of people lived in the plundered, decaying remains. Gangs had formed, where some of the more powerful among them had old guns and rifles. Some even had old police style bullet proof vests.

The story would take the player up into the explorable skyscrapers, down into the flooded subways, around in the now overgrown, jungle-like Central Park. Imagine sitting with an old sniper rifle on top of a skyscraper, trying to take out the opposing gang's leader.. Or getting your first hand-gun instead of that baseball bat. Or a chainsaw! How about stealing a boat from some enemies for the first time? Upgrading the boat with an engine instead of paddles? Imagine exploring every detailed but decaying apartment/convenience store/bank/office you could find, trying to come up with that much needed flashlight battery.. Perhaps finding a scuba dive set.. Finding a long lost "civilization" in the underground tunnels of New York? Fighting against mutated animals in Central Park..

That's the game I would want from Obsidian. Guess I'm out of luck, huh?

  14. Well, the Obsidian/BIS comparison has to be there.. I mean why else would we be here? Who would care for Obsidian if they didn't have their back catalogue of games to take into consideration?

Strangely enough, none of the BIS games are my absolute favourites. (Daggerfall, Wasteland, Deus Ex, Gothic, Gothic 2 in no particular order) But Fallout/Fallout 2 were incredible games, KotOR was fun, but easy and short and I only played Baldur's Gate (not the sequel) and Icewind Dale for a short while because those games were too slow for my taste.

Since more and more RPG's are taking the 3D step I'm expecting Obsidians next project to be in full 3D. With a little luck it'll be in the Fallout/Wasteland universe. There have been a few RPG's in full 3D, but none in a dark futuristic wasteland, like in Fallout or Wasteland. That's mainly what I am hoping for.

  15. Oops. Sorry. I'll just try to stay away from any thread you participate in, ok? ;)

My signature is my hobby. It's a non-commercial game reviewing site written entirely in swedish. We're just a small group of game fanatics trying to widen the swedish gaming scene. I mostly review CRPG's (which is why I am here) and I thought that if ever some swede would happen to wander into these forums he/she should get the chance to read our reviews.

And I'm sure your 56k modem will be able to handle my link.. :)

  16. KotOR was a fun game. It had an interesting setting (Star Wars), a great story, even greater voice actors and an incredible production value. It probably deserved all the hype and great reviews it got.

But what a lot of reviewers forgot was that the maps were very small, the game was actually very linear (yes, after a while you could choose planets/sides but that only changed the order of the missions) and the game was very easy. And it wasn't really a 3D game either. I can't possibly have been the only one who hated not being able to look up and down with the mouse? Who suffered from not being able to jump? Who felt almost claustrophobic in the way too confined level design?

These guys at Obsidian are obviously a very talented group of developers. Unfortunately for us PC gamers I've read that 75% of the computer game sales comes from consoles. KotOR's limitations comes mostly from it being developed for a console first and the PC afterwards (just like Deus Ex: Invisible War that turned out to be.. less than good). Because of economics and profits my guess is that Obsidian will continue in the console-flawed way of KotOR in their next project. And I wouldn't be surprised if it in fact turned out to be KotOR 2, considering how well that game sold.

My personal wish, though, would be for them to create a game with a free world like in Gothic/Gothic 2, physics like in Deus Ex: Invisible War/Far Cry and character development like in Wasteland/Fallout/Fallout 2 and an equally well-written story as in KotOR.

    A guy can hope.

  17. Well.. I once got stopped by the swedish police for not paying my car taxes in time. So I got to pay a fine (600 SEK, appr. 85-90 american dollar) and I wasn't allowed to drive my car until I had fixed that. When I got home I rang the local tax office and it turned out they had sent a cash collector after me! The cost to get him off my back was 500 SEK (appr. 70 american dollar).. But I paid that too and then I finally got them to send me the original tax bill...

I owed them 42 SEK. (appr. 6 american dollar).

    I guess the law won.

  18. I came here because I collect forums. Oh, and I'm also very interested in CRPG's and since there haven't been any good ones in a long while I thought I'd come here and somehow influence the developers so that they create the game of my dreams..

Hey, don't laugh, it might work! :)
