  1. Of course people are responsible for their own actions, but a culture of violence contributes to real violence.
  2. You're the one who's either ignorant or lying. If it's a sandbox game, you should be able to do anything while not on a mission, right?
  3. Yes, it's an economy simulation, Alan Greenspan's favorite.
  4. Yes, solving missions through theft and murder. I suppose you're going to tell me there's no mission to massacre construction workers with a remote controlled helicopter? Edit: Cops coming after you is not a penalty, it's a gameplay element. You're then supposed to murder the cops, or haven't you noticed?
  5. Committing crimes and killing anyone and everyone is what GTA is all about, it's ridiculous to pretend otherwise. What's important is the message the game sends, not what it depicts. A book can depict murder, but it's very different from a book advocating murder.
  6. That's a very idealistic view of the game industry. It's pretty well known that target demographics for most M rated games start at 13 or so. There was also a story not too long ago about gang members playing GTA and going out trying to emulate it and kill cops. Somehow I have a hard time imagining gang members playing Deus Ex. Besides, killing civilians is not the goal of DX, it's just there because it's designed to provide moral choices to the player.
  7. The target audience for GTA includes a lot of stupid immature kids whose parents don't care what they do with their time.
  8. I find the fact that you played it deeply disturbing already.
  9. There's a difference between setting something in a fantasy world and setting it in a real world. Also the target audience for Deus Ex is quite different from GTA.
  10. Thinking that a game presenting murder as something fun and socially acceptable will not have an effect on anybody is extremely naive.
  11. Yes, Pete Hines said the consequences will mostly be confined to each quest. Which is not a good thing, but pretty standard for RPG's these days. But hey, there's always AP. As far as the dog in Oblivion, some of the previews I read said it was obviously scripted, which I tend to believe since there's nothing like that in the game, or even in FO3 apparently. Now Bethesda does say they announced on the forums that AI was being downgraded, but they certainly didn't go out of their way to inform the general public mislead by their demo.
  12. That's good to hear, I'm just going by what I saw on the forums, and the Wikipedia page.
  13. Now that I'm bored with MotB, I think I'll try DX next I've been wanting to play this game for ages Apparently the PC version has some game breaking bugs, and there's no official patch, although I've heard there's a user created patch somewhere.
  14. Action: 1) KOTOR 1&2 2) Thief: Deadly Shadows 3) Deus Ex: Invisible War 4) HL2 & episodes 5) Halo 1 6) Return to Castle Wolfenstein 7) Shenmue 2 8 ) Jade Empire 9) Call of Cthulhu: DCotE 10) Brothers in Arms: RtH30 Strategy 1) Combat Mission 2) Medieval: Total War Don't tell me there are older games which are better, I haven't played them.
  15. The gun shoots any object, not just teddy bears, kind of like the gravity gun in HL2, what's wrong with that? As far as Oblivion being already forgotten, it starts a flame war every time the name is mentioned, so I don't think so.
  16. RTS games would be one, military simulators another. It's tough for RPG combat to compete with a game that's dedicated to combat, although RPG combat should at least be fun. I play RPG's for elements other than combat, too much combat can actually get in the way.
  17. Thus my point stands, most PC games don't support the controller. And yes, I am sure about MEPC. Btw, there's nothing particularly special about their PC interface, it's just an improved version of the console one which they could've had to start with.
  18. But now there are much better tactical combat simulators, I've never seen an RPG I'd play just for the combat.
  19. HL2 is fantastic with a controller, but that wasn't the question. I also looked at Far Cry and STALKER, and I don't think those supported a controller either. I know Mass Effect on PC doesn't support a controller, even though it's a console port.
  20. Why is combat core RPG gameplay? To me combat is secondary.
  21. I wouldn't mind getting a few extra missions once in a while, nothing else really interests me as it should be in the game to start with.
  22. NWN2? Half-Life 2? Those are the only ones I tried.
  23. But is putting your blade skill in a minor slot and using it exclusively "breaking" the game? I'm playing completely within the system if I do that, given the rules that have been set forth. By the same token, someone who puts blade as a major but only uses it when they need to, is also operating within the rules. But you end up with 2 vastly different results: a character who has a 100 blade skill at level 2 or 3 and a character who has a 50 skill at level 11. Don't you think that is a bit of an issue? I'm not saying it's great design, just that it doesn't need to diminish your enjoyment of the game. It's pretty clear to me what the intended way to play is, and it's not having 100 skill at level 2. Plus you can select a pre-build class which is balanced for a certain play style. What Oblivion lets you do isn't that different from providing cheat codes or a debug console, so I don't see why people are constantly making such a huge deal out of it.
  24. @Crashgirl It's not broken unless the player decides to break it, and he certainly has that choice. As far as balancing, you balance it for the way it's meant to be played of course, i.e. playing without any exploits, making the skills you use most your major skills, letting leveling happen whenever you increase your skills enough, as intended. If that's not enough, there's also a difficulty slider.
  25. I wouldn't agree it fell apart in Oblivion. Not the best, most balanced system certainly, but perfectly workable.
