I have been having a heck of a time finding a decent fantasy series to hook my attention. I seem to just hate all the magic stuff lately. I guess I might be better off finding something historical fictiony instead. I just want a decent coming of age adventure type story.

I also can't find many triathlon history or biographies. I guess it is still too young of a sport to have a decent library.

You turned me on to Cornwell's Saxon series. But man that got repetitive real quick. Every book was essentially the same thing. In fact I'm pretty shire he cut-and-pasted some of Uthred's and Harold's conversations from one book to another. As for fantasy... forget it. The only ones I didn't hate were Tolkiens, Rothfuss's first two Kingkiller books, and ASoIaF.The latter two may never even get completed. The rest is just crap!

When it comes to fiction, I only read a few books here and there. And that's only if they're very good. Otherwise, forget about it.

But I can definitely give you some pointers on what non-fictional works to read.

  2. The Secret World has, by far, the best writing and most interesting world of any MMO I've ever played, but, as mentioned, the gameplay and combat are abysmal.  TERA has, by far, the best MMO combat I've ever experienced, but the world, characters, and quests are all super boring.  Also, that game is just creepy with the whole loli thing.  If we could just get the combat design team from TERA and the writing and world design team from TSW together and get them drunk...

As an aside, did anyone here ever try that Russian MMO that Obsidian worked or consulted on or whatever they did?  I think it's called Skyforge.

Man, that takes me back. I remember when I was hunting online for any MMOs to play. Those were the days. All of them looked interesting. I could play none of them though.

  3. Sure. You're right, of course. Good for him for finding his true calling.

It's just, you know... If someone were to tell Past Me ten years ago that Uwe Boll would go on to achieve international stardom as a restaurant owner, I'd laugh it off without a thought.

Here's the thing: he obviously must know how to work with people from all his film-making days, which is why he works well as the administrator of a restaurant. Not to mention he can work well under pressure. Film-making is stressful business, or at least it can be. Even if he made bad films, I don't doubt that he went through a lot to get the films he was working on made.

In many ways, he's like Ed Wood in that both had vision and that vision probably carried over to Uwe Boll's restaurant.

Actually... the place is veryhighly rated.

Huh. Words fail me - honestly and unironically.

Like I said in my previous post, you can still be a bad film-maker and have talent. They're not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Does Uwe Boll even make stuff anymore?

No, he quit in 2016. But he opened a restaurant, so if you wanna grab some food and are somewhere near Vancouver... ;)

Thankfully, that's nowhere near my half of the globe, so I guess I'm safe.

Actually... the place is very highly rated.

Honestly, I think Uwe Boll has talent, but he doesn't execute it well.

You can be a bad film-maker and still have talent or creativity. It's just a matter of who you're working with and how you execute your ideas.

  6. SWTOR is completely voiced and has a dialogue wheel but most of the choices are just small variations that lead to the same end. When the game was in beta some of the choices had more meaning but people didn't like that you could gimp yourself by losing companions because they all had specific MMO trinity roles back then. Now any companion can have any role and you can kill or otherwise lose companions in the expansions but really all it has meant is that any character that can die or be passed over has little to no role going forward.

It would've been better if there was a KOTOR 3 instead of SWTOR.

  7. I also thought the last 2 seasons of GoT have been the worst of the bunch and have really lowered my expectations for this last season. Might be like True Blood for me where I skip the last season altogether

That's the problem with the series: you have to wait a long time to get closure. We don't know how things conclude in the sixth book and in the seventh book. We don't even know if Martin will finish the books during his lifetime.

I wish that he would have someone like Neil Gaiman write the books for him with him giving all his notes and his guidance, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

RDR2 is my most anticipated game, but I can wait it out. Pre-order only content feels so antiquated, didn't they learn last gen to include that sort of content in every new title to discourage used sales? Well, now they are encouraging used sales. Congratulations Rockstar.

Same here. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the first game, but unlike a lot of people, I'm not clamoring to get my hands on Red Dead Redemption 2. I'm sure it'll be great, but Rockstar doesn't deserve nearly the amount of praise that they get. It'll be an enjoyable game, but once I'm done with it, I'll move on to another game and that'll be it.

    That's my thoughts with GTA5....

I enjoyed Watch Dogs and Mafia 2 more but GTA5 stole everyone's thunder. Didn't really deserve it but "legacy".

I know a guy that absolutely despises Rockstar and while I wouldn't go that far with them, I can understand why. They definitely get a lot of attention, hype, and praise even when they don't deserve it. Nobody looks at what they've done wrong. That, and I think their games are needlessly edgy just for the sake being edgy. But hey, if you criticize Rockstar, you'll probably just be attacked by the Rockstar fanboys.

  9. I'll look for it. I read Bob Woodward's book "VEIL: The Secret Wars of the CIA 1981-1987" quite a few years ago. It was almost more of a biography for CIA Director Bill Casey than is was about the agency's activities. But I did learn a lot from it.

You'll definitely learn a lot from this one.

I would also recommend Creating Russophobia: From The Great Religious Schism To Anti-Putin Hysteria by Guy Mettan.

    It really explains a lot.

If you're sick and tired of the Russia hysteria or even the China hysteria, this book is for you.

  11. No sarcasm. :)

I agree about the length, for sure. I prefer the BBC model, where most series run for around 3 seasons and then end. That is also why I like a lot of the HBO and Netflix series, as a season tends to be much shorter and doesn't drag as often.

I think I am also done with the weekly format. I would rather focus on one show at a time and watch the whole thing over the course of a week or two than try to remember all the plot lines over a few months.

    Thank you.

I will say that I like Ash vs. Evil Dead. Plus, it's only three seasons, so that's a good thing.

Honestly, I think the problem with shows that go on too long is that they start to get progressively worse. Game of Thrones is a case in point. I stopped watching after season 5, but I honestly didn't like and from what I've read, there are many people that are starting to dislike the writing, especially for the seventh season.

Personally, I think that A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones are both overrated, but that's just me.
