  1. 7 full fledged companions (3 which are returning characters).. are pretty "meh" to me. i'm not sure if they ran out of budget, or they are saving for the expansions. here goes the hoping for the latter. on a separate highlight on pathfinder kingmaker.. they have 11. anyway these are both games that i'll surely play. here's hoping owlcat can give obsidian some "competition". right now they have none.

We didn't know much about Kingmaker's companion system. From their latest trailer, there will be 11 companions total and two certain companions might develop a romantic relationship. But that' not really saying much. How will the companions interact with each other, and how they interact with PC is the more important part, but we don't know how that work in Kingmaker.

  2.

Somehow that's where I often end up. I always set out to be this great legendary hero but then by act II I'm Mind Tricking people into giving me their money because I'm broke.

How. . .Just. . .How. . .I ended the game with like a quarter of a million. Aside from the Paladin shield in the first town, I never paid for anything. The best loot and spells are plundered off dead enemies. . .What the devil did you find to spend your money on?

I'm quite the opposite, I always has ton of cash on me, and I can find plenty of ways to spend them. But every time I looks at a nice cool weapon on the vendors, I just think "what if I need a huge **** ton of money to buy something really great in the next town?"

Before I know it, I was standing in front of Thaos with half of Dyrwood's cash in my pocket.

  3.

Witcher series has ton of LGBT characters, some of them are quite major characters(like Ciri). Does that make CDPR part of the crusade as well?

Hell, in PoE 1 there is a lesbian companion, who openly states that she is attracted to woman, does that make Obsidian part of the crusade?

Or does it has to be a love interest to the protagonist to count? If that's the case I think Obsidian will be joining the crusade in a little more than a month.

No, because none of them made a big deal out of it. It was just there, like a ton of other content.

Bioware did, and employees of the company did, including Gaider, on the forums. In fact, Gaider was on the record more than most, beating the SJW drum. He was in fact, instrumental in pushing for it, likely because he's gay himself.

I know it's an amazing concept, but people can, in fact, have agendas and people within BW weren't even trying to deny it.

I'm gonna quote Mannock here:"But we are talking about BioWare. BioWare have never tried organize a campaign to change how other game companies portray romances in their games.

So no, BioWare are not crusading, big nor small. "

Homosexual characters have more presentation in Bioware's game and that's what makes people talk about them. So people asked them about it a lot, and they tend to talked about it a lot. It's a simply way of marketing. Besides there is nothing wrong with having more diversity in the game, so why would they try to avoid this topic?

They never tries to label the people who didn't like their games as sexist or racist, unlike some other company *cough* Disney *cough*.

ESRB ratings are crap anyway. An M game can be the equivalent of a PG-13 movie or an R rated movie. You really have to look at the content warnings to judge. The actual label is almost irrelevant.

Truth. The fact that a game like PoE1 and the new Doom have the same rating is indicative of what a joke the ESRB rating is. Super Smash Bros has a teen rating. I and everyone I knew regardless of how overprotective their parents were played that game when we were in elementary school.

"The fact that a game like PoE1 and the new Doom have the same rating is indicative of what a joke the ESRB rating is." Care to explain why? As far as I know PoE 1 has some serious messed up stuff in it, so a same rating as the new Doom isn't really uncalled for, isn't it? Or is the new Doom didn't really need to be rated M(bought the game on steam but didn't find the time to play it yet)?

I don't mind the presence of nudity, but I dislike when it is used cheaply. When it is used for effect, rather than to affect.

The funny thing is, in games in general and RPG:s specifically, I've seen horrid murder, torture, gore, maiming, decapitations, hacking and slashing at limbs, though I have yet to see a thread that talks about such things as being used cheaply. Because in many instances they are. But killing and murder, which inherently is something that is very non-normal in society, seems to be perfectly sensible to anyone playing games.

But throw in a flacid dong or a sex scene (done good or bad) of something that actually is inherently normal in society and people go bananas and talk about crusades, immaturity, cringe worthy and what not.

Just to provoke, I'd say I want one genitalia for every murder committed in Deadfire. :)

Now you have mentioned it, I always find the death animation in PoE 1 quite over the top, like seriously, how the hell was a pistol suppose to be blowing people into million pieces?

  7. Nudity? Nothing new for my character, a Druid in PoE 1. ;)

So, what about Hiravias question? Will our companions be naked in the bathhouse? Will we be able to open the character screen and see them naked? I'm asking for purely scholarly purposes, of course. :shifty: Josh did say something about delving into godlikes, right?

Btw, if Pallegina has feathers in her hair and fire godlikes have fire, then... :w00t:

Romancing your companion as a death godlike will kill them confirmed.

  8. I found it really funny that people complain about how romance in RPGs was never natural and realistic.

Yet when Anders actively try to pursue a romance instead of waiting for the protagonist to make a move, you know like people do in real life, it just becomes "why are you forcing it down my throat?"

Seriously, you turn down a person, he isn't happy about it and gain some rivalry point, what's wrong about that? It's not like he just leaves your party forever.

I don't like Anders, I almost kill him every time after he bomb the church, but have some NPC activly tries to start a romance every once a while instead of acting completely normal until protagonist does something is a nice change in my book.

EDIT: So.... soundtrack a bit less depressing? Not sold on it just yet (hoped for some more tribal stuff) but we will see how it will work in full game. It might be just a soundtrack music anyway.

EDIT : By the way, I love how they never showed us Eothas yet.

Like it's going to be freaking Epic when he'll popout ! Keeping it fresh, I like that !

I had a hard time imagine how are they gonna show Eothas in his giant statue glory and letting player fight him. He is just too huge to handle in that form.

Maybe we get to fight him by buliding our own huge construct.

  10.

I like the soundtrack just fine, except the combat music. But I rarely like any rpg's combat music. Witcher 3's combat music if very good, until it plays for a 1000 times and starts play again when I was just trying to kill two dogs.

Apparently Pillars1 had like 5 or so battle themes. In my mind there was only one, and I was finally corrected on the forums. I think a lot of the battle music just felt like different sections or movements to the same piece. It's a lot better than some jrps which tend to use the same single song every time. I certainly though battle music could be handled better since it's such a stark transition and typically the music plays out the same every time. More dynamism would be great but I'm not sure how possible that would be given Obsidian's resources.

I wonder if any of the battle themes would return. All fresh songs would give Deadfire more of an identity, on the other hand you'd get more diversity by including both games battles themes and you'd have some continuity of theme going on.

I think they should make the battle theme starts more subtle, less dramatic, and only get very intense later if the battle last long enough.

Right now it feels like whenever you see any enemy, it burst into some dramatic music, even when you are just dealing with some weaklings.

In ME:A, Bioware's latest game, a straight male can romance three different characters, all of them are companions who has more content and better made cut scenes comparing to the other non-companion romance(seriously, I had zero idea why they spend so much resource on making that Cora sex scene instead of polishing the game), plus two flings, one of them is straight male only. That's more than any other sexual orientation.

I'll say in DA:I a straight female is better when it comes to romance, not only they have more choices(if you choose to be human or elf), but they also have better content(only because they can romance Solas). But that's probably the only exception.

Kind of case in point right here for why I am hoping Obsidian does not do the romance thing, at least not like Bioware does. The score card for which gender/sexual orientation gets what is a very divisive thing. I mean just saying I enjoyed the Anomen romance got me attacked. And so then there is pressure to make sure everybody gets multiple good choices which is enormously burdensome.

So we have a combination of a feature that is both a source of enormous controversy and a resource hog and includes creating massive amounts of content most of us will never see unless we play through several times (unlikely for a game that is likely to take 100+ hours for many of us). If Obsidian had the resources of Bioware the gains might be worth those costs but they don't. So I hope however they handle the NPC relationship thing it is in a different way. ALL ROMANCES END IN PAIN. I don't know.

Personally I don't think romances cost that much to add. Bioware needs to add quite a lot of cut scenes just for romance, but Deadfire didn't really need that, just extra dialogues. Also making different choices to see how the game plays out is a big part of the replay value, and romance is definitely part of it, so personally I don't really see it as a huge source waste, unless they really goes out their way to do it(the Cora sex scene in ME:A, ).

Like I said before, I believe that if you decided to add romance, you should give every sexual orientation at least one available choice. Otherwise it will turn into a PR crisis. Besides they already finished developing the romance in Deadfire, noway we can change that now.

  12.

I feel like romancing Maia in my first play through(if she can be romanced). I'd argue that when it comes to romance, being straight male was never a disadvantage in almost any game, not even in Bioware games.

Straight male tends to  have the best looking lady as romance interest and almost always has more potential love interest comparing to others. Which is understandable since most of the players is straight male.

Seriously, most of the time the game was writing with the mindset of having a straight male as protagonist, even when you can choose your gender.

    > not even in Bioware games

    > Straight male tends to  have the best looking lady as romance interest and almost always has more potential love interest comparing to others.

    >  most of the time the game was writing with the mindset of having a straight male as protagonist

Clearly you haven't played any of the recent Bioware games.

I'd definitely agree that this is the case for the Baldur's Gate series, though.

If you change a portrait, you won't change a 3d model, which is set in stone and is even more detailed than in PoE1. It is not BG with a bunch of colored sprites. Most of the time you see your party on the map in good 3d, and things like Maia's size or Xoti's overall "latina" type will be there. Setting pale elf portrait to a char, who obviously has black hair and brown skin is strange and only breaks the immersion.

My view of companions at this point is not based on supposition, all this facts have been stated by devs. Xoti will be religious, and it will cause conflicts inside the party, and it was stated by Sawyer multiple times, etc.

There was a huge movement to add Ydwin as a companion, there is a huge thread here and it was even a goal for $5M kickstarter goal. The main motivation of people asking to add her was interest in such type of female character, not just a strange urge to have one more companion.

About Xoti, a human girl, being statistically more attractive to a human male (average player) - it is basic psychology. People feel more attracted towards people, not aliens or strange creatures. We may go for exotic, but are still programmed to get attracted to our kind. This works even on the level of human races, when in most cases a partner is usually found among the same race.

    > If you change a portrait, you won't change a 3d model, which is set in stone and is even more detailed than in PoE1

That's true but for the majority of the characters this won't make a huge difference.  You can pick a portrait that's reasonably similar to the character's in-game model.  Maia is an exception since she is green-skinned race, but there are some Aumaua portraits on the net and you could also look for Half-Orc portraits, they might fit.  As for Xoti, are you seriously telling me you can't find a decent-looking latina portrait if you look online?

Hell, this is another area where girls have it worse because it's much easier to find very attractive female portraits online than it is to find male ones.

    > Setting pale elf portrait to a char, who obviously has black hair and brown skin is strange and only breaks the immersion.

Congrats, you spotted the problem with a portrait I grabbed off my hard drive in a matter of seconds.  It was merely an example.

    > The main motivation of people asking to add her was interest in such type of female character

What's your point?  This doesn't seem relevant at all the discussion.  We're discussing how character aesthetics affects your enjoyment of the game, and I'm pointing out that with a very small amount of work you can customize your NPCs quite a lot.

    > About Xoti, a human girl, being statistically more attractive to a human male (average player) - it is basic psychology. I agree with this, maybe you were responding to someone else?  Not quite sure I see the relevance here.

  13. Yes, I agree that my view is not completely clear of 2x standards or stereotypical thinking, well that is just my view on the picture, it can be pretty distorted. The topic is about personal thoughts, not cold analytics :)

Ydwin interests me only due to her scientific background mixed with rogue-cipher way of life, that was a very interesting preset to develop a cool character. Her appearance is maybe the worst.

I am sure there will be a mod, the question is - will it have quality. It is hard to match pro-writers of Obsidian level.

About male companions - easy, I am not able to evaluate their physical attractiveness, as I am not into males, so I focus more on their archetypes.

As for ladies I also pay great attention to their personality, except only for Maia  - we know nothing about her except she is Kana's sister, so they may share some common features, she is a noob captain, and she is an agent of Rauatai trade company. But that is about job, not about her personality. She may be Kana in skirt, or may be completely opposite.

As I mentioned, feeling no interest in given set of female companions will only lead to more focus on the plot of the the game, relationships are cool bonus content, but not necessary at all. Besides, my default rogue-cipher is more interested in whores, and my secondary paladin-chanter is all about good deeds and duty. My RP style will not require romance at all.

And those "2x standards or stereotypical thinking" is exactly why the SJW has the power to ruin games in the first place, because when they starts to pointing fingers, they actually have something to back them up.

"About male companions - easy, I am not able to evaluate their physical attractiveness, as I am not into males, so I focus more on their archetypes. "  is also not very convincing, we can tell whether a same sex person is attractive or not, even we don't feel sexually attracted to them.

Seriously, I have nothing against good looking characters showing up in the game, but stop judging a book by it's cover. You know nothing about those companions, what the developers says is way too vague to come into any conclusion. It's like those people who praise Witcher 3 to no end because the females is fxxking hot, when they even didn't play the game in the first place..

  15. The percentage of people who plays harder difficulty on a forum is bond to be higher comparing to the overall numbers. Because only the more 'hardcore' fans will goes out to a forum and talk about a game.

I usually starts at lower difficulties because I like to build my character based on how I feel like it instead of power level. But at higher difficulties you can't really play as a very wacky character and didn't die a lot.

  16. Sexual repression is probably more common tbh.

I think romance is very dependent on the circumstances of one's life, and is not guaranteed to makes sense or be appropriate given a story. Role-playing is about choice and freedom, but as it pertains to the scope of the narrative. It's also interesting to take part in an established world instead of just operating as the noble-liberal fresh out of the Earthly realm who will impart their other-worldly sense of values onto all that they meet.

I think depicting some love and romance ambient in the world is fine, watching one companion fall for an npc or another companion, or otherwise is fine. But not when rolled out as a fully ubiquitous system that one's whole party is taking part in. The notion that every character is must be romancable in some way betrays a deeper and more natural sense of what relations are. What about the freedom for the character to pursue relations with well written characters that exhibit their own freedoms. That is life, relations should come up against road blocks whether on romantic grounds or otherwise. Which is why I'm really happy that Obsidian is exploring what they are. I'm even more excited over the inter-companion relationships, which will be responses to the environment that you cultivate in your party.

It's the right decision because romance should complicate things, and writing unique character relations plays heavily with the emotional relation between characters and where they are in life. Take romance seriously, depict it well, don't waste time telling that many times over between many different pairings.

The only RPG I know where every companion is romanceable is Original Sin 2. Famous as they are, Bioware's game never lets you romance all of your companions, no matter how many people are demanding it.
