  1. Before it sounds like bad communication and management leads to tension and people at each other's throat.

Now all I can think of is "Mr Chris Avellone,if every thing you said is true, you should be talking with a lawyer about suing Obsidian's ass off on the day you leave, instead of posting on a forum years later."

So, umm. What kinda ****ed up laws do you have in USA if you can just take away someone's owner stake from a company and not pay a dime for it. To me that just sounds ridicilous. Unless they faked his signature on some documents I'm pretty sure it couldn't be done here.

That's exactly why this story doesn't add up.

EDIT: Unless as some say above pretty much everyone hated him and voted him out with their combined controlling interest in the company. But in his story somehow Feargus (AKA Moloch the Devourer) can just magically make this happen on his own.

Even they voted him out, they don't really de-ownered him though, you can't vote one's stake in the company out without paying him. He won't have a say in the management for sure, but he will still have his stake.

Unless he quit in response to being “de-ownered” which is what he said he did.

Someone at Obsidian must be legendery at persuation if they can talk Chris into agreeing "giving up all the stake he has, all the money he should receive based on his stake, and didn't sign a NDA yet didn't tell everyone how evil Obsidian is right out the gate"

  3. Companies get those clauses in to stop employees from going to the competition at company B with company A's ideas. Why? Because Obsidian has some 170 people working for it and their continued employment is more vauluable than the single individual who is quitting, being fired, etc. Also, it doesn't matter "who" this individual is. The CEO's job is to try and protect all his employee's jobs. Sometimes they succeed, but not always.

Hypothetically, let's say the Tim Cain game has some pretty new tech for dialogue that is really good and makes the pipeline super easy compared to anything they've made before. MCA quits, goes to Bethesda, and says "Hey, this new dialogue system I was working with at Obsidian would work well here. Let's make something similar." Now, Obsidian's hard work is being replicated by a company much bigger and more weight to throw around. This could hurt Obsidian by reducing any money they make, and jeopardize some 170 jobs at the company.

They didnt say he couldn't work on games, but RPGs specifically. My guess is they have some ideas that MCA knows about that are specific to RPGs that they would like to implement, but don't want it showing up in another title before they get the chance. They also didnt banish him forever, but most likely for a few years.

My company makes you sign a clause to not work at their competitor for 5 years if you quit, are fired, or whatever. The difference is we only have 1 real competitor and not about 10.

Obsidian doesnt really compete with Take Two, but to some extent they do compete with Larian, InXile, even bigger studios like Bethesda and CDPR. So, ensuring your ideas benefit your company and employees from your competition is actually normal, and IMHO a pretty moral thing to try to do. Now, there may be extenuating circumstances we aren't aware of here, but nothing MCA has said about this clause indicates as much.

I find it absurd that lots of people claiming Obsidian tries to use the non compete clause to "ban Chris from doing RPG ever again."

Even someone is careless enough to sign such a thing(a non-compete contract last forever), it won't matter since it's not legal and they can't do **** with it when you just ignore it and go work for the competitors.

Is sheath a thing in PoE 1? I always feel you just hang them on your waist or back when you are not using them.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't - just skimming my old screenshots all my characters had their weapons in their hands.

Yes but you can equip two sets of weapons and the second sets will be appearing on your body instead of your hand.

Anybody catch the interview with Geek& Sundry? Is there anything new in it?

I didn't even know about it. It's archived already, but you (maybe) have to subscribe to Geek and Sundry to watch it.

    https://www.twitch.tv/videos/256786856?collection=Uu7MCEZL_RSxsQ

Looks like Josh and Co. show up at the 40 min mark, but I haven't done more than skip ahead until I saw something I recognized (which turned out to be Josh).

Can't watch it since it's subscriber only. Based on what I see on RPGcodex and 4chan, the only new thing is that they confirmed the talking sword romance? Didn't have any proof though.

    > they confirmed the talking sword romance

    What.

That's the reason I want to see anyone did watch the show and can clarify on this, since I've seen several people on RPGcodex and 4 chan say something like "romancing the sword confirmed", but I'm not sure whether they are joking or something.

I saw games getting ruined because of "romance" - if you think that romance is just sex...- and I saw games getting better because of it. I never played The Witcher 3 because everything that I hear from that game is, "which bitch shall I bang?" and that is it... Dragon Age Inquisition is just an awfull game that didn't know how to handle romance right, with the exception of Harding, every single romance feel rushed, it feels like they want to give sex to the main character as soon as possible... talking about sex... Mass Effect is just a sex simulator now, the trailers are out and people are preoccupied with the appearence of the team, one of the comments from the trailers: 'There was a Bioware dev. meeting with fans two years before, in that meeting one SJW girl stood up and asked the developers to make the female characters literally ugly and 'thick'. Seems like Bioware took it to the heart."  when your game community attracts people with this type of thoughts... that is when you know you destroyed your game...

BUT, you have some games with great romance options, like Dragon Age Origins, I don't know about you guys but for me all of the romances in that game felt natural and, the most important, felt right towards the character personality.

TL;DR: It's important that the romance don't get in the way, that the best thing about the game is the combat, the lore or the story and not if you can bang someone or not... oh... by the way, Xoti is not beautiful to you? Why? Well... maybe it's because your culture is different. The culture of your country really dictates what you like and don't like.

Don't listen to the Witcher 3 stuff. The game is fantastic, easily the best modern rpg. I can't really fathom why some people would talk about banging girls in the game, there's really not much in it. There's just two romance options. I think there's one or two one-offs you can have in side-quests but I can't really remember all too well. It's a 100+ hour game so it's definetly not a focuss in the game by any stretch. The only reason why I can imagine some people having that conversation is because they didn't actually play the game and are still hung up on the cards from Witcher 1.

Because lots of people didn't play Witcher 3, they 'like' it because "Ohh pretty ladies and I get to decide which one I should bang", Same goes for the hate with DA:I: "All the female characters looks like **** and all the males are gay!".

They don't know much about these games other than the memes.

Witcher series has ton of LGBT characters, some of them are quite major characters(like Ciri). Does that make CDPR part of the crusade as well?

Hell, in PoE 1 there is a lesbian companion, who openly states that she is attracted to woman, does that make Obsidian part of the crusade?

Or does it has to be a love interest to the protagonist to count? If that's the case I think Obsidian will be joining the crusade in a little more than a month.

As far as I know the Witcher series has two gay characters. In Witcher 2 a wizard betrays the good guys. He's subsequently show with a half-naked male slave, squeezing his pimples. The designers explicitly said they intended to make him as despicable as possible. His sexuality serves to make him even more disgusting to the presumed straight player, much in the same way bishonen and sissy villains were meant to do for decades. The wizard is killed but he can also be castrated for good measure. It is indeed one the most homophobic games of the last years.

In Witcher 3 Geralt can find a hunter in the wilderness. He is described as freak. If the player inquires the hunter will explain that he fell in love with the son of the local lord. Said lord caught them and the son killed himself. The lord became an alcoholic, his estate fell into ruin. And the hunter now lives in the wilderness alone because he is a social outcast. This is by no means a positive representation.

Ciri is an entirely different matter. While this was not the case 20 or 30 years ago, the current ideal of heterosexual masculinity dictates that straight men must think lesbians are hot. The reactions towards lesbian characters in games is nowhere anywhere near as negative as those toward gay characters.

Philippa is also a bi-sexual character(or lesbian?), in Witcher 3 they don't really show that but Dijkstra mentioned it in his dialogue.

  10. I was expecting a little banter from the sidekicks - nowhere near as much as  a full companion, but it does seem a little odd to have none.  Not even a cheeky/pithy/sarcastic/etc comment here or there?

If they're just 'official' adventurer's hall companions, then they're the same as the Critical Role companions, no?  Unique voice-set+portrait but nothing else to distinguish them.

Hopefully their personality shines through in their introductory quest/convo.

We don't have CR companions, we have CR portraits and voice sets and that's it. If you want a character from CR you have to create it yourself.

Also Josh mentioned that there will be banters for sidekicks, but only a little, probably only comments about something here and there, not conversation to other companions or sidekicks.

And it is quite clear that you can have conversation with your sidekicks, which is more than normal adventurers you create.
