To be safe, make sure you don't actually use Luca for anything. I believe I trained some skill of his, but when I removed him from the ship entirely (back to the inventory slots on the right side and not to the "resting crew" section) he "merged" with his twin brother (showing Luca with a "2" on his avatar) and lost his ranks.

This!!! I would've respec'd already if it wasn't for this, and the price is only getting higher and higher...
