Take into consideration that they are in the very beginning stages of the game.

Would making the pet immune to disengagement attacks be the best way to solve the pet weakness problem?
I would say no, but it certainly couldn't hurt. My issue with that would be that it wouldn't make sense, though; why would specifically ranger pets be immune to a mechanic that affects each and everyone else?
I'd say if you needed a "real life" reason, it'd be because animals are faster than men. Or, if that wasn't sufficient (maybe because you're thinking: hey what about enemy bears?), you could say it is the result of the speed of the animal AND the spirit bond of the ranger, which allows for them to guide each other in combat.

While, yeah, sure, the Chanter can probably substitute the role to a degree, compared to a "real" necromancer, I must say that if we are talking thematically, I would never envision a singing, chanting necromancer walking around, stabbing, shooting.
Really? I can't think of anything more necromancer-esque than, "Many historians consider chanters to be the most ancient workers of magic, their hallowed phrases stirring the collective memory of wayward souls around them, compelling them to generate magical effects in a kind of "reenactment." !
But I guess it all comes down to how you envision it. Would it gimp your chanter to throw a scepter on him/her?

Chanters are what you want to make a classic Necromancer or Death knight type character.
At every tier they have invocations that thematically match those two classes.
1st Tier:
- If their Bones Sleep Still Under that Hill, None Can Say – Summons three skeletons until the combat ends.
- White Worms Writhed in the Bellies of the Dead – Causing nearby downed enemies to explode expelling three white grubs and crushing nearby enemies.
- But Reny Daret's Ghost, He would not Rest –Summons one phantom until the combat ends.
2nd Tier:
- At the Sound of His Voice, the Killers Froze Stiff – Paralyzes Enemy in the area of Effect.
- Reny Daret's Ghost Spake, "I'll Catch You, Ben Fidel" – terrifies enemies in the area of effect
3rd Tier:
- Seven Nights She Waited While the White Winds Wept – Attacks enemies in seven directions around the chanter with bolts of freezing ice
Just run with those invocations, as well as the chant that drains health, the chant that frightens enemies, and the chant that bestows an aura of frost that hobbles enemies-- and you'd have a pretty damn good Necro or Death Knight (depending on armor and weapon choices).

I do have a question. Are people sending their pets in as soon as the fight starts and making them "tank" or are they having them hang back and attack things that are already engaged?
Well, originally, I got the impression that the pet sucked from watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=jfz0hu8Zjqg#t=3608
In almost all of those encounters the pet goes down. However, now that I know better, it appears that the pet was put in a very bad position almost every engagement (or outright ignored).

Basically that they've gone through a bit of tweaking, and you don't want to use your animal companion as a meat shield (that's not their intended purpose).

I haven't heard about changes to Rangers pets, but Josh did talk about them in the stream last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lft6p0McF00#t=2662
This has me thinking that the pet should be used carefully/tactically. I plan on rolling a ranger and using the animal companion as a sort of "second wave" attacker. I'm guessing that will make the wolf best for that kind of play.

I don't care whether this change stays or goes
Then stop arguing about it. If you don't even notice it and you don't care then let it be changed. You won't notice anyways. I've already tried to explain that if you want to make the argument that "you didn't even notice it" then it cannot by your own argument be creating any sort of meaningful decisions for you to take into account during combat. So it's useless to have added it back.
Oh right, taking things out of context and then attacking them are really going to help meaningful discussion.

....
And as for my virtual combat time...I know what you guys are talking about its how I know you want to exploit systems, not have a balanced game experience. Impassioned cognitive dissonance is still, ultimately, dissonant.
I'm new to these forums, but this seems to firmly hit the nail on the head. A couple of weeks ago, I started lurking here in anticipation of the release of the game. I was immediately put off at the incessant and whiny attempts at manipulation of the "codex" guys (someone on the PoE reddit site tipped me off that this was a thing). Now, I just find it highly entertaining. This dude Sensuki reminds me of that grumpy cat.
I laughed so hard when he made a video of an "exploit" for no clipping, when a Dev had to post on their codex forum-- just to try to figure out how he managed to do it. He must have gone out of this way to set up the perfect conditions to make his argument. Conditions, that no normal game consumer would likely ever encounter, all in a weak attempt to support his vision of the game. The cherry was then watching a dev try to tactfully explain to him that you are acting like a raging autistic, via a comment like "I hope you can enjoy the game when it releases!".
Edit: Also, the bit at the end of the video "I WILL FIGHT AGAINST THIS!" LMAO

Does this effect enemies too? Because if it does, it seems like it would have tactical implications more than just "waaa the tax for tea is too high for me!". For instance, wouldn't abilities with knock backs be more interesting/critical? Or finding ways to force enemies in to having to move?
-
Thanks for that. I am sorry to see that the ranger was not performing well. Hopefully the animal companion issues will have been fixed on release.
-
I watched the playthrough with Josh Sawyer, and noticed that the ranger pet goes down almost every fight. Is that supposed to be that way? Because if so, I'm not really sure I understand the class concept.
I mean the pet should be a perk not a hinderance, right?

I cant' even imagine how multiplayer would work in a game like this.

^BALANCE!

Oh nice thread! Hmm I think I'll try a first character like this:
Name: Undecided
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Cipher
Culture: The White that Wends
Background: Mystic
I'll educate myself a bit more on the lore of the game to see if I can actually make sense of a Wood Elf coming from the White that Wends or else I'll probably try a different back story and choose to be a scientist from The Living Lands. Unless! someone convinced me that the Pale Elf passive doesn't suck at all.
And she is coming to Dyrwood for her own interest and curiosity on the animancy research there, what the folk there think about ciphers and learn about the Glanfathans "brîshalgwin" stuff like that.
I think this game it's going to be very special to me so I'm planning to do something weird here, I'll try to make my PC a bit like me and make her personality mainly deceptive and clever, besides that I would like to make some type of character arc with her, she could start innocent and benevolent but later become crueler or maybe the other way around, I'll see if the story fits with something like that.
For role play reasons I would like to focus my attribute points mainly on INT, RES and PER. Maybe even totally neglect CON to use more points in the other attributes. I just hope I'm not making combat hell for me ehmm besides I kinda want to play on Hard and with Expert Mode on .
I'm not so sure which talents to pick for her, I could grab Quick Switch, Arms Bearer, Savage Attack and equip her with a bunch of fire arms like the blunderbuss? yeah I don't know, I'll listen to any suggestion
Also she will probably wear Clothes and Robes... or maybe something else that I find way to cool looking to ignore cough*
(first post yay!)
Wow! I made my first post here to post a very similar character to yours! Great minds think alike!

Does perception play a role in the detection of hidden items/traps?

Name: Baleros
Race: Pale Elf
Class: Priest of Wael
Culture: The White that Wends
Background: Mystic
Baleros will be a trickster priest, favored by the diety Wael. He longs to solve the mysteries of the world, all the while enjoying causing chaos and hilarity whereever he may. His dogma will be much like a zen monk (confusion is ok as long as one tries to understand it), with a bit of the fae thrown in. Obviously, I'm going to focus heavily on playing him deceptive, as well as clever. However, I plan on adding a touch of passion to him whenever possible.

It is possible to run a full party without priest?

The chanter with ancient memory can heal, so can the Druid. It seems do-able to me.
