  1. Rubbish. You just don't have any answers to my questions. I've answered your questions plenty enough.
  2. Part underlined for emphasis: This was exactly what some people were saying at the start of the thread, though. Having an opinion on the rationale behind a certain scoring system is one thing, attacking a reviewer's score because it doesn't tie in with your (general you, not you personally) rationale is entirely another. Let me ask you this, though: Are you honestly, honestly telling me that you are so incensed by reviewers using a 10-point scale (where 10 is 'only' the top score, not the 'perfect' one) that you have to actually "object" to it? Also, can you show me 1 example of a reviewing site (for anything, not just games; music, books, movies, travel destinations, etc.) that doesn't use this scale? Do you object to those as well? How do you think a scale more to your liking would be any better to the system in place now? There are a LOT of things wrong with the (games) reviewing system nowadays. Too much publisher interference (Kane & Lynch, anyone?), general lack of journalistic writing skills, etc. Giving games a 10/10 isn't one of them, though. Clearly none. No matter how often this is repeated to people here by myself and/or others, they insist on attacking reviewers over giving games 10/10 ratings, spouting 'no game is perfect' as a reason, moreover. Your personal insults are tedious and boring, and add absolutely nothing to this discussion. Whatever though, you go man. Fight the good fight.
  3. No, I would ignore it, because whether or not a game has b00bies is not relevant to my finding enjoyment in a game (which may or may not be a complete lie ). However, what I would NOT do is go around claiming the reviewer said it's the perfect game, when all he's saying is that the game has b00bies. I'm not convinced that everyone truly has understood, to be honest. I mean, why have this discussion again when it should have been done and dusted in the Oblivion thread that mentioned the Eurogamer review, for example? At least the discussion does seem to have moved on somewhat, as you said, but I think I'll reserve judgment once I've seen more of it down the line. For my part, I think the criteria are perfectly valid/reliable/logical, as anything else would just make a complete mockery of having a 10-point scale in the first place. That doesn't even make sense.
  4. Seriously, what is wrong with half the people in this thread!?! It really isn't a particularly difficult concept to grasp. Most (major) reviewing sites give you a definition of the rating scale they use in their reviews on their site; IGN's happens to be one of many where a 10/10 is not a 'perfect' score, merely the top one available (an important distinction that half of you are unable or, worse, unwilling to accept). The reviewers then base their scores on precisely their own definitions. As such, IGN giving GTA IV a 10/10 is perfectly valid. You CANNOT then just come along and apply your own interpretation of what you think a 10/10 should mean to their scores; your interpretation is simply irrelevant. Well, I guess you can, since half of you have been doing so for the last 6 (!) pages, but it just makes you look like an ass. Considering that Hurlshot, Spider et al. have drawn your attention to this already (on page 1, no less!) makes it doubly so. You guys were pulling the same stunt when Eurogamer gave Oblivion a 10/10. You were wrong then, you are wrong now. I honestly believed that humans have the capacity to learn, but you guys make a good case for why they might not. Mega-fail.

    Muzaq

That is probably because Amon Tobin, the guy who did the soundtrack, generally makes good music: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...aifrxq9hldse~T2
  6. I've had a go at the demo for this (although I've only played the tutorials so far). Really enjoyed it; definite purchase for me, although with the massive backlog of games I've got atm I think I'll wait till there's a double-pack which includes the expansion. As for what the game is: 4X + RTS (http://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/)
  7. I suggest you read the rest of the thread, but thanks anyway.
  8. And so the story ends... Icasaracht is slain, Icewind Dale can live in peace again. And only 5 out of my 6 man team lost their lives in the process...
  9. Well, my new copy of HoW (GBP 2.50 on ebay, bargain!) arrived today, and everything seems to be working fine. Excellent!
  10. Yeah, tried all that; to no avail, unfortunately. And my dental hygiene products are going to remain just that - dental hygiene products - as well. Ah well, ebay. Not that this won't be the 3rd copy of HoW I'll be buying...
  11. So, I finally managed to complete TotL and got back to Lonelywood with the help of the ring. Unfortunately... errors down the line. Everytime I now try and enter the Barbarian camp the loading screen gets about half-way, then the screen just goes black and crashes on me completely. Damn. Tried Tigranes' trick below as well, but no luck. Ah well, I guess it's toothpaste time, and if that doesn't work ebay.
  12. True, but they look cool. They're BARBARIANS after all! As for the slowdowns, have now turned off static background animations, runs pretty smoothly now.
  13. I'm using 16-bit and I still get the black boxes without Software BLT turned on. I've heard that different people had to solve this problem in different ways; what worked for some didn't work for others. For some, changing from 32 to 16-bit helped them get rid of the problem, whereas others (like me) needed to switch on one of the BLT (bacon lettuce tomato???) settings. I guess I just need to tinker some more with the settings to find the ideal one that doesn't result in black boxes, but gives me the least slowdowns. As for the 'ultimate collection', is this what you mean? Cause that's what I've got, and it didn't come with any patches, was just plain old HoW - certainly no Trials of the Luremaster.
  14. While IWD is nowhere near my favourite game this is my second run-through. Currently about to enter the Luremaster castle, then I just have to head back to finish the last chapter of HoW. Anyway, turned on Software Transparent BLT, and that got rid of the black boxes. Seems to be working fine now (although I'm experiencing some minor slowdown in some areas where there's a lot going on; checked BG2: ToB as well, and the slowdown was there as well (Saradush, for example)). These IE games, sooo hardware-hungry, eh?!? Do you mean these guys: pic (sorry, couldn't find a bigger image)?
  15. Well, according to this FAQ AR9200 is the Barbarian camp. Quite an important area, I'd say. Ah well, we'll see what happens when I get back there. As for the graphics glitches, yeah, I've still got some options I can try, like turning on Software BLT, etc. That seemed to have helped other people with GeForce 8000s. I'll have to run IWD Config later and see what I can do. Anyway, thanks guys and gals for the help so far.
  16. Balls! But then again, not. I downloaded the file from Qwerty's link (once again, muchos gracias!) and then burnt it on CD along with the uncorrupted files from my original CD. Now when I try and install the game I get this error message: "CRC error CRC error: The file C:\Games\Icewind Dale\ CD3\Data\eAR9200.cbf doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor." Thankfully, the installation continued once I clicked Ignore, and the Widescreen Mod is now installed as well; I just hope that this doesn't cause errors further on down the line. Also, the graphics bug is unfortunately still there.
  17. Hrm, I guess you're right. There's a small but deep scratch on the disc. I've tried cleaning it as well as possible, but the installation still conks out when it gets to eAR9200.cbf. I've also now copied the entire disc to the harddrive; fortunately, that's the only file that seems to be corrupted. All others copied fine. If you (or someone) could email me the file, that'd be ace! Cheers!
  18. I recently installed BG2: ToB on my new PC* and ran into the black box problem, which, apparently, is not uncommon on GeForce 8000 series graphics cards. After I installed the Widescreen Mod, however, all these graphics problems disappeared, so I've now got a perfectly working copy of BG2 on my PC. Sweet! I'm now trying to do the same thing for IWD: HoW since the unmodded version throws up the same graphics problems. Unfortunately, the Widescreen Mod requires a full install of HoW, and I'm getting an error message when I attempt the full install (the recommended one works fine, though). The error message is: "Component transfer error Component: Full Uncompressed File Group: Full Uncompressed File: D:\CD3\Data\eAR9200.cbf Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" Once I then press OK the installation is simply aborted, i.e. it dumps me back to the desktop. Does anyone know what this error means, and whether there is a way around it (e.g. by doing the recommended install and then copying some files from the CD to the harddrive manually)? * Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz 2047MB RAM GeForce 8800 GT Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
  19. Turrican? Pffffffffffffffffffffffft Hurrican!
  20. There's only 4 cases? (w00t) How long is the game?
  21. Waht? [edit] Anyway, that video for the Witcher was cool. [/edit]
