How to build a Sharpshooter/Devoted sniper? (Hunter)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have been testing some things out. I am quite new to this game (Like everyone else :p). I want to build a Sniper character that uses the Ranger's Sharpshooter subclass together with the Fighter's Devoted subclass. What I am looking for is maximum damage and a high hit/crit rate. I am especially having problems distributing my stats and selecting my abilities. I understand that I want high might and perception but what about dexterity? It is worth spending some points in it, in order to lower the high reload times or will this not change a lot? What about constitution and resolve? Do I need it? Can I lower it? Should I leave them at 10? Can anyone share a good stats spread with me? About the abilities, I am mostly wondering what active abilities I need. For example, do I need the heal pet? Should I spend more points in the active portion or the passive? Right now I am focusing on the passive side. Like the -20% reload time and +15% damage with 2-handed weapons. As you can guess, any help is appreciated!

Well i do believe that the 15% hit to crit conversion does not outweight the 10% longer reload and attack time of sharpshooter (and -10 deflection), so i'd suggest to go for ghost heart or vanilla ranger.

If you want to go all out on crit i'd suggest you take crossbow (10% natural hit to crit conversion) dps is as good as an arquebus and has no penalty on neither accuracy nor crit damage.

Most talents should be be passives that increase your attack/damage like marksman ,gunner, driving flight , weapon spec and mastery (even though it's just a small boost it adds up), improved critical, survival of the fittest etc.

I think you can more or less dump defensive stats to go all out on dex, might and preception.

And you will heal quite a large amount with your constant recovery due to high might.

For active abilities i would only go with disciplined barrage and wounding shot since you will be an autoattacker with very high penetration and wounding shot has the best damage/bond ratio and benefits twice from crits due to increased duration.

Gunner is extremely good , it is basically equal to 8 points of dex in terms of reloadspeed.

If you decide to go for ghost heart instead of sharpshooter you can make a full dps companion without worrying about it dying.

Vicious and merciless companion as well as predators sense almost double its dps.

Does gunner work with bows and xbows? Thanks for the tip about the ghost companion. I will have. Look in it.

Bows, no.  Xbows, yes, IIRC.

Regarding the choice of ranger subclass, regardless of the benefits of playing a sharpshooter, I think that Ghost Heart may be a better choice for a  truly dedicated sniper.  Why?  Because if you're playing a Ranger other than the GH you're going to have to put some ability points into your pet to at least help keep it alive and not get blown away battle after battle.  With the Ghost Heart subclass, you have the option to ignore your ghostly pet entirely and have no need to select any abilities for it, which means many more ability points spent on your character.

This whole pet thing is still annoying to me.  The devs are so stuck on Rangers having to have pets.  Why, oh why, couldn't they have made choosing to have an Animal Companion into a ability to choose, perhaps at character creation?  Sigh.
