can someone explain to me please what the difference is with sidekicks and when we get them and are they permanent additions to the group.

They're basically story companions... without any story.

As Clerith said, they are companions, but with no in-depth across the entire game mega character quests. They just have their inital quests and they decide to join ya and have good times.

They're like companions but there is little to no 'banter'. Interjections and the like.

I'm under the impression they're for filling in gaps in your party as opposed to having their own personal quests and whatnot.

No, they have a quest, but little beyond that.

And its more recruit than say... crazy things that span multiple story acts.
