What do I need to do in the iOS app to get rid of the red badge on the app icon indicating there is something new? I can't find anything to make it go away.

You have togle off the events. Or something similar (I have non English version) from the ios settings.

 

The topmost setting in the picture... togle it off.

Configure browser push notifications
Chrome (Android)
  1. Tap the lock icon next to the address bar.
  2. Tap Permissions → Notifications.
  3. Adjust your preference.
Chrome (Desktop)
  1. Click the padlock icon in the address bar.
  2. Select Site settings.
  3. Find Notifications and adjust your preference.
