So far I've encountered Pŵgra and Lurkers, yet only awakened wood.  Where is the root?

Those monsters drop the roots but only if you don't allow them to move an inch before you kill them.

 

Kidding. A Google search suggests they do indeed drop it. Go kill some more of them.

Just discovered, you can get awakened roots from the Curio Shop.  I've never seen that listed anywhere, so there you go.
