[2.03] Potential bug with "Best of" weapons

Guest

Question

Expected behavior

Taken from strategy guide:

post-1981-0-06221000-1448818514_thumb.jpg

Copied from loadingtips.stringtable:

"Any weapon that lists a damage type like "Slash or Crush" will do whatever damage type is more advantageous, usually whatever type the target is most vulnerable to."

Actual behavior

Weapon alternates damage types on subsequent attacks and ignores advantage.

For example - Pallegina with great sword (pierce/slash), PC with sword (pierce/slash) vs drake (14 DR vs pierce/18 DR vs slash). Both Pallegina and PC should be applying pierce damage (lesser DR). Instead first attack targets slash, the next pierce, then slash, then pierce, and so on.

It's possible that the engine simply ignores DR deltas that don't meet a certain threshold, but 1) it shouldn't and 2) that isn't how the mechanic is being advertised.

EDIT: could not duplicate with Forest Lurker who has an 8 point delta between pierce and slash DR. Watching the combat log like a hawk now.

EDIT: went for round 2 with a different drake on the same map. Couldn't establish if the pattern held up (a lot of misses and I have no idea if damage type is determined before the attack roll or after a graze/hit/crit has been established). Did confirm that some damage was being applied with the "wrong" damage type.

Currently playing on 3.0.2 steam beta

If you can control how they feel, you can control how they think.

Hey Achilles,

From your screenshots it seems that only the Grazes are not following our 'best of' rules. I'm going to look into a little bit more and get a bug in.

Thanks for bringing this up

-Sking

Edit - This is actually just a cosmetic issue in the combat log. If the damage you do is so low that both types would be doing the minimum amount then the damage type will not switch.

Example: you attack a dragon with a crush/pierce weapon > you hit for 10 against the dragons Crush DR = 14 and Pierce DR = 10 > you will do x.xx Crush even though Pierce is the lower DR, because either damage type will be the same.

Ah, thank makes sense. Thanks for checking into it and following up.

Side note: can't believe I didn't notice it was only happening on the grazes :(
