Lock picking

Character has mechanics skill of 5, I have 5 lockpicks. Chest has a difficulty of 8, but I can't open it. 

 

This has happened with multiple locks in different areas. I've tried reading forum posts on it and it appears that my patches are all up to date (I just bought the game a few weeks ago).

It's generally shown on the locked item itself.  You'll see a panel of info:

 

Mechanics 3  1 lockpick

Mechanics 2 2 lockpicks

Mechanics 1 3 lockpicks

 

or something like that - it appears to take into account the highest mechanics in the group.

 

When I get into somewhere that my rogue can't unlock things with some lockpicks added, I go back to Caed Nua and do a level or so....

For a chest with a difficulty of 8... wouldn't you need a mechanics skill of 8? It isn't mechanics + lockpicks = total.

As far as I know you can go up two levels with lockpicks, but not 3. So if you have 5 mechanics, one lockpick can open a 6 or 3 can open a 7, but you cant open 8s at all.
