How I can upgrade my character?

Today I have start to play the game. Now I get a message that I can upgrade my character. But I don't find a button to do that. I have searched every pixel and all possible buttons in all character screens - without success. I am confused...

There's a plus (+) button next to your characters portrait on the main HUD, click on that and you can level up your character.

Click on the "+" on the portrait.

If you're like me, then you will get all giddy inside when you see that "+" sign on your character portraits.

Wow, that is a very awful GUI mistake, I think. A very, very small and unremarkable button INSIDE an other button... 

Please, add a big and huge plus button inside the character sheet (for example inside the character image). Such important character modification buttons should triggered from the character sheet!
