Chants run automatically, in the background, as free actions once combat begins. That's it. Nothing more to do.

As the chant continues, the chanter completes phrases. If the chanter completes enough of these, it unlocks access to invocations. 3 phrases are required to unlock level 1 invocations, 4 for level 2, and 5 for level 3. The use of invocations is completely optional (though highly recommended). Once an invocations is used, the "chant counter" is reset and the process starts all over again.

Hope this helps.

You should customize your chants. When you select the chanter, the rightmost icon can be right clicked on to configure up to 4 "phrase sets". You can switch those sets in combat, but must have them ready before.

Level 1 phrases are the weakest, and last 4 seconds. They have the advantage of charging the chant counter the fastest.

Phrases continue to linger for a short time, and the last phrase still provides benefits when the next phrase has started. For example level 1 phrases have 4 second chant time plus 2 second linger time. They keep your chanter busy for 4 seconds, but provide benefits for 6 seconds.

So if you configure a chant to use two different level1 phrases, it may work like this:

XXXXxx..XXXXxx..XXXXxx..XXXXxx....
....YYYYyy..YYYYyy..YYYYyy..YYYYyy

There are moments where you're benefiting from 2 phrases at the same time despite the fact your chanter can only sing one at a time.

Level 1 invocation (activated spell) costs 3 points. Level2 is 4 points, level3 - 5 points. When you have enough points for a level1 invocation, you will hear a subtle sound and the chant counter will flash. Invocations tend to be more powerful than spells of other classes. Summoning invocations can be especially good.

Editing chants is a must to get the most out of your chanter. Kana, as he comes, only sings two phrases although he already possesses three. High level chanter spells, namely the conjurations, often times require up to four phrases.

But they don't have to be different phrases. You can chant two, or even one phrases in a loop and your chant counter will still increase every few seconds. It makes sense, doesn't it ? Level 1 Chanter learns two phrases and one invocation immediately. If he had to chant three different phrases, he would be completely unable to use that invocation.
