how do I attack non-red npcs, enter combat manually?

Can't figure this out, getting frustrated.

 

Guess I should say not 'normal attack' but like abilities to start the fight.

There's a little sword icon on the UI at the bottom. Use that.

No you don't. I killed one "green" character because he totes deserved it. Click on sword, click on recipient of violence.

though sounds like it makes it too easy to attack the wrong target than?
