Killing creatures does not, in and of itself, yield experience points.  However, killing creatures does improve your bestiary, which *does* yield XP.  That tops out after the creature in question has been fully detailed in your bestiary.  Also, killing a creature that completes a quest will yield you quest XP as you complete and turn in quests.  At least that's how I believe it was working.  I haven't received my game yet to give it a shot.  :Cant's wry grin icon:

You don't get XP explicitly for killing things.  When you fight a new type of creature, it will create an entry in your journal about the creature, which will net you some xp.  You can then get additional xp for killing that same type of creature to a certain limit, and once you've completely filled out the beastiary entry, you will get no further xp for killing that kind of creature.

That's exactly what I'm seeing -- thank you for the explanation. I think I like this mechanic.
