I liked interactions with deities as well, but it should somehow fit into your character progression. I think BG2:ToB did this relatively well - encounter with gods only happens later on, when you are really becoming more of a demi-god rather than a simple adventurer with divine heritage. But being a plaything for a mad god (I think you are refering to stuff like in the elder scroll games) is imho not as funny, at least not for me.
