Border controls have effectively ceased to exist at Heathrow, with no drugs checks taking place AT ALL.

 

This is less irresponsible than it sounds, since checks barely make a dent in the international trade. The Home Office know this, and you can see the truth bleeding into policy in sideshows like the Border Agency.

Maybe they shouldn't announce it like that, deterrence counts for something.

Deterrence might work on individuals seeking to shift a few hundred grammes. But we are talking an industry here. It works in tonnes. Drugs move (so I understand) largely inside licit goods. Machinery, fruit juice, lampstands.

 

As I've said before, it takes the simplest mathematics to perceive that so long as drugs are cheap to make and expensive to buy, and licit material moves across borders with all the automation and tonnage we see then it's pure stardust to suggest they can be kept out of the country by the border people.

 

If anything, all the border customs do is prevent entrepreneurs from moving drugs, which keeps effective control of the market in the hands of organised crime!

 

Sorry if I keep banging on about this, but people are dying for this foolishness.
