Blarghagh
I figured this would be a handy thread to have (and I searched, but couldn't find one) for all aspiring Game Designers. Post any interesting articles on game design here so we can always find them again. I'll kick off the bat (pretty sure this is not an expression and I am committing animal cruelty here) with The 400 Game Design Rules Master List. It's unfinished and some entries are vague or useless, but some of these tips are very useful and things that Game Designers may want to keep in mind. http://www.theinspiracy.com/Current%20Rule...ster%20List.htm Edited March 28, 2011 by TrueNeutral
Blarghagh
In the interest of trying to get some damn content in this thread and life into this forum, I'm just going to double post and add another I found. http://corpocrat.com/2010/09/21/best-free-...ame-developers/ The url is a bit misleading, it says best FREE game engines for game developers which is not exactly true, though some of them are and it's worth looking at for those who want to make their own games. Walsingham
Thought I'd clang some pans together to add noise. *clang clang clang* "It wasn't lies. Walsingham
Thanks man, means a lot to me. Well, that's what I figured. A meaningful contribution like that. ~~ Question: Do games get developed like normal commercial applications? "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp. Blarghagh
I've recently watched all the "Extra Credits" videos on The Escapist, and honestly, they offer such an in depth look at video games that I think they qualify as helpful resources for developers. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits Question: Do games get developed like normal commercial applications? I'd hoped someone would have answered this by now, because I can't. I don't know how normal commercial applications get developed. I'm just an animation monkey. EDIT: You know, I debated adding this because it's right on top of this board, but I really think that one of the best starting points for beginning game developers is Sawyer's Tips For Modmaking. http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?showtopic=8168 Props to Sawyer, who is completely awesome. Blarghagh
Hm, past my edit point. Sorry about the double post, but I'd like to note that Extra Credits has left The Escapist and are now working via YouTube. You can find them here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ExtraCreditz
Walsingham
I was thinking about our recent discussion on the subject of being enuthusiastic about being a developer and something occurred to me as an outsider: You chaps make it sound as if it's rather like declaring yourself a fan of Texmex cooking by becoming a flank steak. Walsingham
So... we love it because we get set on fire? I'm saying you approach your love of the area - arguably - from the wrong end. Like "I love prostitutes. I will become one!" "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. Blarghagh
Subverted because I'm actually not that much of a gamer, I mostly play games to see how they work and tinker with them.
Blarghagh
Extra Credits has moved again, they can now be found on Penny Arcade TV. http://penny-arcade.com/patv/show/extra-credits All old episodes are also archived there. This would have been a great thing to be able to edit.
