Sherincal420 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 (edited) I'm a DM on one of the PWs for NWN2, my concern is regarding the stability issues that are still present on servers. From my experience, I've notice many stability issues related to players jumping PWs and still having overrided 2da files, which seem to cause majority of the random crashes. I've also learned that there isnt any security from stoping players from having these files during charcter creation and logging into the server. I know by creating Hak 2da files for your PW will help with some stability issues, but what do you do when the Dev absolutely hate the idea of using Haks? How do you stop players from having these overrides and are there any other methods or tips to help our PW distinguish override crashes from scripting crashes or transition crashes. What are some suggestions that we can do to help make our PW more stable. I would be willing to work with anyone who can help us. Edited October 2, 2007 by Sherincal420
Sherincal420 Posted October 2, 2007 Author Posted October 2, 2007 (edited) I wish I knew why the developer doesnt want to use Haks. But I need someone who knows what they're talking to respond with tons of info. I would like to know if Obsidian recommends that ever PW use haks for security purposes and to help more stability. I think the only way he'll be convinced is to hear it from obsidian themself I guess. I understand Haks are something we can do, is there anything else? I've heard some PWs running some kind of plugin utility to help Obsidian find bugs and such, is this true? Edited October 2, 2007 by Sherincal420
Sand Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Can you just filter out those who use overrides in their folder and ban them? Or simply disable the override folder completely when someone is logging in, and if the character was built using overrides it becomes an illegal character thusly booted from the game? Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer. @\NightandtheShape/@ - "Because you're a bizzare strange deranged human?" Sherincal420 Posted October 2, 2007 Author Posted October 2, 2007 (edited) Can you just filter out those who use overrides in their folder and ban them? Or simply disable the override folder completely when someone is logging in, and if the character was built using overrides it becomes an illegal character thusly booted from the game? our server is The Forgotten Realm, we have over 12,000 registered users. the server almost always has the most players on a daily basis. you cant just ban a player for having files in their override folder. that would be time consuming and it would turn away players. without players, there no donations. my understanding is that the overrides are loaded last and will override the haks anyways, thus still making the use of Haks meaningless. i mean seriously, do PWs have to create their own override sweeper program to remove unwanted files? why cant some brilliant programer create a plugin for Audolo or Worldgate to sweep each players files and remove the overrides prior to updating? this is the only way that will work and i cant find anyone who is even interested. if someone can take the time to create Audolo and Worldgate, i dont know why they dont take the time to create this. this is something that is definietly needed. Hurlshort Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Uh...did you say donations? Isn't that totally against company policy?
Tigranes Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 It ain't payment, it be donations. From what little (i.e. zero) that I know, couldn't one 'disable' the use of the override folder rather than ban users? I.e. Sand's idea. Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)
Sherincal420 Posted October 3, 2007 Author Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) Uh...did you say donations? Isn't that totally against company policy? hopefully thats a joke, because every nwn1 and nwn2 PW has always had a donation section on the forums. the developers still have to pay for bandwidth and in some cases a cooling room. bills are quite expensive. It ain't payment, it be donations. From what little (i.e. zero) that I know, couldn't one 'disable' the use of the override folder rather than ban users? I.e. Sand's idea. anythings possible i guess, but one of scripters said its unlikely that will work. im starting to think there is something wrong with our Devs computers. there might be some kind of memory leak or something. thus causing the server to have so many random crashes. i'll have to wait and see.
