What was that other show Chris Carter produced, about a man who enters a game that is used like a penal colony or somesuch? It lasted only for a very short time.

Harsh Realm. There are 9 episodes so far as I know. Not great, but not bad either.

Meta's kind of right about the description. The military created a virtual world mirroring the world of 1990 in every way possible and populated it with virtual recreations of every person on earth at that time. It was to be used as a training sim to show the results of a nuclear attack on the US. One of the first soldiers sent in, Santiago, took over the game world and controls much of it.

Since then, the military has sent in a great many other soldiers, telling them its a video game and challenging them to beat Santiago's high score by killing his virtual representation. However, except for Santiago who has a backdoor into the system, once a person enters the game they cannot leave without killing Santiago. The main character is Tom Hobbes, the newest of the soldiers sent into Harsh Realm. There also seems to be some sort of savior prophecy about him.

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dying

Are the best I've ever had
