Cannot Start Game

Recommended Posts

Okay, so here's the general gist of the problem - I cannot start KOTOR 1, 2, or Neverwinter Nights on my computer. The only thing I can figure is that possibly it's an AMD related issue (a friend has the same issues on his AMD-processed computer, but not his Pentium), but I have no clue how to prove that. Here are the contents of my SWINFO file:

What seems to be failing is the video drivers, and even though I have an ATI card in my machine, the on-screen reason the config program gives me is that "Your current video card drivers are out of date. NVidia cards require Detonator 45.23 drivers or better." Also, the config program never actually closes; I have to go in through Task Manager and stop the process before it will take me back to the initial game menu.

I have similar problems with Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR 1, neither of which will launch on my main computer (though my celeron-based laptop will run both). I wonder if it isn't the same problem for all three...

Any suggestions? And why does my operating system (Windows XP Professional) report as Win98 in the config program?

Looks to me like you need to update drivers, eh

http://www.ati.com

Otherwise try downgrading them to around a month or 3 after Kotor2's release...

And the Win98 thing, yeah, kotor does that sometimes with ATI-cards

Sadly I tried that before I posted here. In fact, I've tried everything I can think of, including updating all the drivers for the motherboard, sound card, monitor, etc.

This issue began after winXP service pack 2 came out. Again, I only have this problem on my Athlon machine - it works on every Pentium machine I know that it's installed on, no matter what video card it runs. I don't know a any Athlon machines where it's working - and we all updated to service pack 2 around the same time.

Basically I'm thinking I'm going to have to upgrade my comp to a new Intel chip in order to run this game (sad that my 800 mhz laptop will run it and not my 2 gig tower...).

AMD with XP SP2 here... working normal.

Dual-core processor?

Also did you try the downgrading of drivers?

I have also seen reports that if you try to install ATI drivers without running the catalyst uninstaller before that the updates would not take effect and you keep the old driver stuff...

Hmm, hadn't thought of making sure all the nvidia drivers were gone, I replaced that card a loooong time ago. I'm not even sure how to get rid of them all now!

Good point Hassat, I hadn't thought to make sure that the ATI drivers "blew out" the old ones, perhaps I should try a complete uninstall/reinstall of all video drivers. Would I need to go into safe mode to remove them all?
