Not hard to open the case, stick the card in and install the software.

Installing the cards is the hardest part!  :(

then I'm awesome :)

To be fair the whole thing's just plug'n'play, and Bok only has to take stuff back because he doesn't research his specs enough. I just find seating the cards hard because some of them are so damn flimsy. I'm always worried I'll break them. :(

RIP

I do research, just some part is sometimes defective.

Hooking up all those itsy-bitsy wires from the case (USB, audio, power, HDD, etc.) onto the motherboard is the most annoying part. In general, wiring up is annoying. Installing Windows/Linux is a close second.

You can do that? :-

I think static is an overlooked danger. It will FRY components like RAM as one's fingers pass within a spark's distance.

Which is why you ground yourself by touching the case before you start to do anything inside the computer.

Yes.

:)

Have the power cable connected (there is an earth lead in it) as you touch the case, then take it out, and continue with the "operation".

Or wear one of those wristbands that you put on your wrist and attach it to the case.

Or touch a radiator just before you start working on your sensitive equipment.

Installing RAM is pretty hard to. Always a combination of push hard and be gentle.

networking sucks :) I hope I never have to do it again.

Oh, I can do RAM too :)

the only thing I wont attempt is a power supply and a motherboard/CPU

When I tried it, the computers did not show up on each machine. Everything was connected, everything was on, I followed the instructions on how to do it, and nothing.

Did you set up each computer to connect to the network and allow file sharing between them? (I'm assuming you were using XP)

Yes to all the above. Win XP was on both computers.

Hmmm, I'm not sure then

It's been 2 years since I set it up, and I never encountered something like this :)

Aye, it makes you look like a pro. I always wear mine when I'm assembling someone else's machine in front of them. :)

I always think it looks dorky. But that why it is more important to do it. :D

My rig

When I got a new computer case (on my birthday, exactly one week ago) I moved everything from my old case to the new one and installed a new GPU and soundcard. That was the first time I ever installed a motherboard for myself. I have, however, built other people's computers from the ground up. It's funny that I think it's much more stressing to build my own computer than others. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
