Whenever I open a browser (e.g. to change your msn avatar, or 'save file as'), all files in the folders are listed from Z to A instead of the usual A to Z. Going through folders the normal way does not have this problem.

When I right-click and select 'sort by name', next time I open a browser all files are sorted Z-A again, so that's no use.

This may sound pretty trivial, but when searching for stuff in a folder with over a thousand files, it gets pretty annoying having to select 'sort by name' again and again just to get it right.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Are you talking about standard Windows "save" dialog?

What browser are you using?

I am assuming you are using windows xp. I'm not sure if this will help but have you tried:

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View

Then click Apply to all folders.

that option is greyed out

Are you an 'Administrator'? I guess if your user account doesn't have administrator status, that might account for the option being grayed out. Just speculating, though.
