Problem with Resulutions

I bought a notebook and now KOTOR2 doesn't run.

System: Pentium M 1.86, 1024MB RAM, GeForce Go 6600 (V78.01), WinXP SP2

KotoR2 1.0b, already latest drivers at all

Problem: When I want to start the game it gives me an debug error. So i searched to solve the problem. I found that hardware preselector (where u can change resolution, etc. without starting the game) doesn't show any resolutions. The laptop TFT supports 640x480 / 800x600 / 1024x768 / 1280x800 @ 60. Other games (e.g. HL2, NHL06, GTASA) run fine. Hardware check says all green.

So I tried to change resolutions and refreshes in kotor2.ini without effect.

Does anyone know something about that? Any way to solve the problem?

Thanks for your help!!!

:p

I cant think of any real soloution, but maybe running the game in windowed mode will at least make it run? That way the game never makes the request for a resoloution change so you *might* get away with it.

Running in windowed mode may decrease your performance though, but its better than not running at all right?

EDIT: actually i dont think windowed would be a help, try it anyway just incase, but it sounds like you have a different problem, sorry :p

I know when i changed video cards a few times in my system KOTOR2 got confused as to what card was in the machine, i had to choose the correct card in a drop down box somewhere for it to run. Maybe your KOTOR2 is having problems finding the card?

The readme for patch 1.0b says "Corrects an issue with ATI Radeon cards being incorrectly reported in the swinfo.txt"

This makes me think that there should be a file called swinfo.txt somewhere that could be edited to report a different card (tricking the game into seeing your card) but a system search cannot find this txt file...

EDIT2: ignore the crossed out bit, turns out swinfo.txt is a text file you can create after running the scan hardware button in the config. It doesnt do anything, bah...

Does your game match the reccomended requirements? Does it pick up your graphics card when you run swconfig.exe?

I'll keep looking for anything else, but i think thats all i can suggest :(

First of all thanks for your help!

I tried the windowed mode and - what do u think - it doesn't work. But I find out something else:

>>> I've a 17" TFT from my old PC. I connected it to the notebook, set it to first display with clone mode, centered the picture (cause TFT runs at 1280x1024) and the game gives me resolutions in hardware setup. :* Well, I stated the game and it runs (w00t) very fine with the GeForce Go 6600. About 50 frames with 1024x768 2AA 8AF. Now I can switch between the Displays via Fn+F4. <<<

Bad ideas may work... To start the game u always have to do the procedure I did. But in case thats not really a good solution. So when the game starts on the external display there must be a solution to get it started without connecting the external display. I don't want to connect it every time I start TSL.

So folks: Any good idea will be accepted and tested!!!

EDIT: swconfig says all green. It tells me my Pentium M, Geforce Go 6600, ... All seems to be ok. I'm getting crazy! It seems to be a problem with the #$*%

Aaah, so it seems the game has problem with your moniter and not the graphics card. Normally i would suggest looking up the moniter and seeing if it has drivers for download, but with a notebook you cant really do that... hmm.

I hate problems like this, because theres nothing from pysicly making the game work, its just damn little bugs.

I would check CD's you got with the notebook, or look online, see if theres anything like "general drivers" incase it includes drivers for the screen.

If you right click your desktop, go to proporties and then to the "settings" tab, it should display the name of your display, most likley it will say something like "generic moniter" or "generic display". See what it says, it may have the name of your screen and you might be able to check for newer display drivers for it.

Aside from that i'm stumped, i'll see if theres anything in windows that i can find that changes how the display is picked up, but i dont think i'll find anything.

EDIT: The name of your notebook might be usefull, i'll see if i can find anything online aboot it.

I bought a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1439G. Normally they sell very good notebooks and they have an excellent support.

I didn't find any driver for the display. So I tought I can create one with Rivatuner but to do so the display has to send EDID Infos. This is not the case. To create one manually I've to know the specs but I've no datasheet and couldn't find one at FSC's homepage.

But anyway all other games have no problems with this. It just s*cks. What makes it necessary to a game having monitor drivers???

EDIT: XP installed a generic driver - thats right. Now I created a driver with Rivatuner. Added Support to 800x600/60 1024x768/60, added some tweaks in hope it'll work and ... NOTHING! Also tested S-VHS TV support on notebook. Nothing, too.

Thinking about to give up but I don't want to. Obsidian what have u done? :'(

You may also want to try Guru 3D. They have a bunch of different beta version drivers you could try as well. Where Omega shows the most recent NVidia driver as 66.93, The official release version from NVidia now is (I think) 77.something. Guru 3D has a NVidia beta version 81.85. Worth a shot anyway! :-

(Dual-Boot)Windows XP Pro (32 - Bit) SP3 & Windows Vista Ultimate (SP 1) 64 Bit | Intel Dual Core 2 Quad 6600 @ 2.4 Ghz | 8 GB Corsair DDR 3 Ram 1600 mhz | GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB PCI Express X 3 SLI enabled | NVidia Forceware Drivers 181.22| EVGA nForce 790I-SLI Ultra MOBO | Thermalake 850 Watt PWR |

First thanks for your help. My official WHQL nvidia is 78.01. So I tried latest Beta which nvidia released this week. No matter, nothing happend.

I'm now going on to test DNA and OMEGA Drivers. I'll see if it helps. A telephon call with Fujitsu Siemens (asked for display drivers and specs) ended with a confused guy at the service center.

I will post my results with testing DNA/OMEGA.

Until this is done please pe patient! ;)

YEAH GUYS!!! I GOT A SOLUTION!!! (w00t)

The problem is just small. The game doesn't find resolutions or refresh rates from the display. Why I don't know. Other games have no problem. So I played around for a while and at one moment the "force was with me".

I decided to add only one resolution (1024x768/60). This is no Problem with Forceware drivers. You have to mark 'only user def. modes' and add the resolution you want. Only this res. now will provided. Then go to TSL hardware config and et viola you can select the res. you set at Forceware. You can easily switch between resolutions by marking or demarking 'only user def. modes'. I think this is possible 'cause you activate an override by Forceware drivers. So all other informations which are aviable will be overlayed. Thats all.

At last I want to thank all of you for trying to help me. I hope that this problem should not matter in future.

And now: happy gaming! :D

EDIT: I want to say SORRY 'cause my english is just a bit poor.
