EnderAndrew Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 A valve allows only one way traffic. A sphincter is a ring of muscle. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, but the sphincter acts as a valve that allows one way traffic.
Atreides Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 On a tangent, I was watching a programme about supersize kids living in England and in one case a older teenage girl and her mom decided to get the intestine surgery (can't remember exact term) that drastically reduces their stomach capacity -> appetite so they'll slim down like crazy. Basically they told the divorced husband/father about this a few weeks before the operation, and the girl cried when he said that she wouldn't need it if she had a change of lifestyle (ie not staying with the mom/house stuffed with junkfood/cake etc) and went to a fat camp. Anyway they went ahead with the surgery and for the rest of their lives they'll be eating small servings of highly regulated gruel because they can't digest complex foods anymore. Effective, yes but I don't understand why she'd pick a lifetime of gruel over some effort while maintaining the ability to eat normal food. In the programme, a boy cried when he was confronted over eating undercover while he was supposed to be on a diet to lose weight (he put on weight after his routine started and they snooped on him after school). Spreading beauty with my katana.
Darth Flatus Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 We all like to make fun of american fatties but unfortunately the uk has a fast growing proportion of lardy kids <_< Gastric bypass surgery isnt always successful and requires a huge amount of discipline for it to work. It is a drastic solution and i can understand it being used where a morbidly obese person needs to lose weight or die. However with a young person (endocrinal disorders aside) this kind of surgery shouldnt be allowed, too much emphasis is placed on miracle diets to lose weight - this partly due to scam artists making up bs diets and also people are to blame for searching for a quick fix. The key to sustained and permanent weight loss is a combination of regular exercise and controlled eating. It sounds so simple and it is simple but surprisingly relatively few people seem to realise this fact.
EnderAndrew Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I try to kick, beat or spit on one fat person a day. Really, I'm trying to encourage them to lose weight. I figure my mentally manipulating them to understand that fat = bad, then they are more motivated to lose weight. I consider it my one good deed for the day. I am so totally kidding.
Darth Flatus Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 ...thats a shame. End World Hunger! Feed the Fat to the Poor
Musopticon? Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 That would so work; we become cannibals. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. EnderAndrew Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Sounds like a modest proposal. http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html
