I refuse to hear the word "soccer"!

I think the word 'soccer' was coined in the UK, to differentiate between Rugby football and Association football. The only other country I know of that uses the word soccer is Japan - well, 'sakkaa' actually, but the same idea.

Yes, many American and European sports are quite popular in Japan. For instance, American football, regular football (you're welcome DL), and baseball.

Also @ meta, originally American football had alot more to do with using your feet, before the rules were changed.

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

Yeh, the Japanese have a weird fascination with baseball... you just have to watch Takeshi's Castle to know that!

Oh, how I love that programme :p:lol:

P.S. I'd prefer the term 'real football' but I thank you Arch :p

That's because Japan is basically a US colony since their defeat in WW2, and consequently they idolise anything US. :p"

Just curious Launch, do you play soc football?

Actually I do play football Mr. Metadigital :p

I used to be a winger for a team (local amateur team - nothing big - but won some trophies) until I moved away to uni, so now I just kick about with friends occasionally :p

P.S. Does that satisfy your curiousity Mr. Metadigital?

Japan is not a US colony!

Though of course, it was occupied and heavily influenced by that occupation. And influenced by European and other cultures, too. One of the best characteristics of Japanese people is that they openly acknowledge and celebrate these foreign influences; they don't pretend they invented it all themselves (unlike some). :p

On a sadder note, with reference to the last page about deaths in sports, at the school where I worked in Japan, a student died in the baseball club because he was forced by the coach/teacher to train in boiling hot/humid weather without a chance to rest or take in water. My first duty as a teacher there was to attend his funeral.

Sure, i wasn't being rude, I was just interested to see if you were a player as that would explain your passion for the sport. (I see there is a Women's European Football cup/thingie coming up shortly on tv, too.) In fact, I'd much prefer to watch women playing football than men.

For example, most people hate cricket. I don't, but I suppose that can be explained by my being an ex-player. (There is nothing better when you have a hangover than to drift in and out of slumber watching the cricket on tv: nothing happens for the most interminable periods of time, all with the appearance of frantic movement (bowler running in, batsman facing a ball, fielders scampering around the oval) -- cetainly the moment anything of any significance happens there is a dozen replays after the ambient volume jumps 18 decibels, until you drift off to dreamland again ...)

I would find your fanaticsm a little more difficult to understand if you didn't play the sport that obviously means so much to you.

of all the races in the galaxy only the english would be insensitive enough to create the game of cricket. The bit where the ball hits the wicket i find to be particularly tasteless.

What was that noise? It sounded like a million people saying "Wop!" ...

Did he make the Women's team?

PS Very rude, is he trying to show his "sensitive" side to impress a girl, or going there with a mate to get drunk and watch the women mud fight?

 I suppose Michael Owen might be more suited to a Women's team...

Well, since my brother's now married I can't imagine him trying to impress anyone... and he can't be truly interested in women's football after he realised that we don't allow guests in the shower rooms... he's obviously doing this to me to be evil and cruel...

:(

*sigh* I just really want to go... I haven't actually been to the City of Manchester Stadium yet either...

P.S. Mr. Metadigital, if you seriously don't know why I'm congratulating Michael Owen, might I direct your attention here
