Darwinia is already (I think) out in the UK and should be hitting US shores on the 8th. Despite being on an old crappy vid card til my replacement comes in, I still managed to love this demo despite the expected bad framerate (I hear it runs good on average systems and up, can't vouch for it yet).

If you are anti-evolution, don't worry, the name isn't about people: It uses the name to refer to the development of an AI society made by a programmer in the eighties. Its a mix of arcade shooter, strategy game, and just plain kick ass.

Its impossible to describe or compare it to anything, since its truly unique, but give it a go.

Here's IGN's review: http://pc.ign.com/articles/599/599090p1.html

I spotted ads for this game online as an import to us in the states, so it is available here, and as i recall the price was around $30.00--i also thought the plot sounded quite unique--am interested to hear any feedback from those on other shores who have played it.

(unfortunately with my dial-up, downloading most demos is unrealistic. i would buy the game most likely tho if it is not in shooter format -- and not a bug-laden crashfest)

I experienced no bugs with the demo, and none of the reviews I read mentioned them. Its a great game, especially for 30 bucks.

Glad you enjoyed it. I got the impression from the publisher's blurb that it contained some rpg elements--a society of pixelated characters within a computer world threatened with some evil or other? anyway, once it hits the shelves i may check it out--also the review you linked. it would be refreshing to play a non-Tolkeinesque rpg for a change (even though i always miss the pointy-eared elves and woodland dwelling rangers when i do.)

The demo is great fun, I urge everyone to at least try it.

It's more of a RTS than an RPG - with a unit maximum of 3. Trust, it makes sense.

As whoever reviewed it in PCG UK said, it's impossible to describe with words. Just play the demo.

Darwinia should be in the above article because it's an under-appreciated classic. If you're a gamer or a developer you have to buy this game, if you're a casual gamer buy it only if you can find it @ 30$. The devs announced that free extra content and an expansion will be available in the future, the community is developing mods to extend it.
