Origin of the word Padawan?

Anyone know if Lucas made this up, or is it a real Japanese? word.

 

I've been crawling the net for days and can only find references to Star Wars. I'm guessing it could be a word like JEDI... ie there is no real word jedi, or if there is, it doesnt quite mean what it alludes to.

Wherever the word's from, it sucks. Every time I hear padawan I think of a rubber duckie. Yes, it's that bad. :p
