I was told using them was the only way to get into the seemingly "inaccesible" weapons cache on Dxun, the one by the recently-dead Mandalorian. I believe I can get in there because there is a mine behind that door. Can anybody help me out here?

You get them in Korriban in that library in the Sith academy.

Has anyone had this happen?

I was darkside and helped the mercs on Dantooine. After I killed Vrook  , I left Khoonda Plains. I was about to leave and I noticed that the Droid merchant was laying on the ground, dead. I checked his corpse and one of the items was the thorium charges!! I haven't gone to Onderon or Korriban yet.

Yes,  he dies if you side with the mercs

odd on my last playthrough I was pure DS but, he was still alive after I helped the Mercs take Kahooda.
