I think your right. My suggestion for implementation is to have an egg be spawn in the hedge. You can pick it up. Mean while you see inchworms in the bottom of the hedge and some branches. They are harmless but make..... fertilizer as they eat.  The egg would have a timer just as the ant egg. When it hits zero the egg hatches.  The caterpillar is treated as a semi pet. You have to keep it fed to keep it growing stage one requires slurry, stage two requires sprouts, stage three clover leaves and stage four grass planks.

The caterpillar will provide you with honeydew and fertilizer. When it pupates you get a large cache of fiber and the chrysalis. Since a legandary head armor exist I suggest puting in some fancy boots that allow you to jump while riding on a glider(basically a double jump). And plans for a new glider that is based on the Luna moth or Morpho butterfly

The butterfly or moth that hatches will depart and not be a pet however you can repeat this process. The negative of doing this is the caterpillar will release honeydew and also trigger a rush of ants and other insects that will try to lock in on the location of the caterpillar requiring you to either fortify it's nest or kill the invaders

If you see light at the end of the tunnel get out of the road!
