My wife and I can't play due to high ping dispite being in the same house. Something has to be done with the mulitplayer ping issue. Also a local multiplayer would be very welcome

Here as well. This game is so superalpha. High Ping for joing player all the time, joining players quickbar gets set back on every join. Joining player can't build to axisting structure suddenly and so on.

They are looking into dedicated servers to make playing with friends more reliable and having available to selected friends 24/7 even without host online. Hopefully they green light this and implement it soon. Will really help with overall playability.
