Do you have to recruit Vatnir to progress the DLC?

I really do not want to recruit him for role-play and aesthetic reasons. And I also want to run a tight ship with just 4 story companions/sidekicks (for ship combat), as I am using custom companions for the regular party.

you can get the icepicks from him (what you need to progress) without recruiting him. you can even kill him as part of the dialogue, if you want.
