It seems to me that the new sith lords are more cunning.

They didn't try to challange Revan when he was in charge, but waited untill the right opportunity to rise to power.

 

This suggests a new patient sith philosophy rather than just trying to kill your commander as soon as the opportunity arises, no matter how the sith as a whole may suffer.
