  1. Finished Heavy Rain, twice. Writing a review on it, actually. It's a good game, but it has a very slow start, some major plot holes, and more bugs than any game I've played on the PS3 since Lair.

Good thing I chose this time to write the review since my copies of the God of War Collection or MAG wouldn't have worked anyways.

  2. Currently reading Veins of Ice by Icelandic author Yrsa Sigurdardottir. It's a quite exciting thriller, but I don't think it's been translated to English yet.

Also reading through Changing the Game: How Video Games Are Transforming the Future of Business. Exciting material!

  3. Still playing Final Fantasy XIII, plan on finishing it this week. It annoys me that I have to go and grind crystarium points to win boss fights, and it annoys me even more that I cannot have a proper conversation with any character in the game.

If anyone has ever played Folklore, FF13 feels kinda like that game. Just prettier and with a deeper battle system.

  4. I'm still sleeping in when I shouldn't be doing it, guess I'm just tired after my finals.

Stumbled to Akihabara to check import game prices and spotted two stores I will definitely use in my future as they were selling the games below the market price, even cheaper than the used games stores sell them for. Some import stores have ridiculous prices - one of them was selling Modern Warfare 2 for 12.000 yen! Also had some nice d

  5. Today I went to school and sat in the library reading for a test I have on Wednesday from 13:00 till it closed at 18:00. After that I moved to the reading room and read there until it closed at 22:00. I'm currently sitting in my school's computer room, which is open 24/7, researching for and writing an essay on Advertising and product placement in video games.

  6. Humm... here are some topics you might want to check out:

    Japanese criminal organizations (Yakuza)

    The pachinko industry

    Japanese stand-up comedy (manzai)

Any typical classical literature (Pillow Book, Tale of Genji etc)

Late 19th and early 20th century literature (Natsume Soseki perhaps?)

The Yasukuni Shrine and its relations to bad relations between China and Japan

  7. It's funny to hear that one of the first rescue teams sent by a government to be dispatched to Haiti was a team from Iceland of all places.

Why is that funny? Iceland lies in a highly volcanic area, they'll probably always have own rescue teams ready for occasions like this.

It's funny because Iceland is slowly becoming the first OECD country to come close to bankruptcy. Of the Western nations, Iceland has probably the biggest right to shrug their shoulders and say "Sorry, but we don't have money for that."

  8. I might never understand why some people choose to live next to volcanoes or in earthquake-ridden areas. It's really kind of sad :(

Yeah, imagine all the poor fools in the United States, especially those close to the Yellowstone National Park, which is like a ticking timebomb which can explode anytime between now and the year 1,000,000 AD.

Everyone should just move to Greenland.

On a related note, it's sad to see that nations are so slow to offer a helping hand. It's funny to hear that one of the first rescue teams sent by a government to be dispatched to Haiti was a team from Iceland of all places.

  9. After two weeks of no gaming I'm finally back in Tokyo and still playing FF13. Seeing how my finals are about to start, I don't see myself playing any other games throughout this month. About 15 hours in and still enjoying it. It has become a bit frusturating not being able to switch party members, but I hear that in about 5 hours I will finally be able to do just that, yay.

  10. Dragon Age: Origins

    Demon's Souls

    Brutal Legend

Resident Evil 5 (for its coop)

    Rock Band Unplugged :3

    Torchlight

    Final Fantasy XIII

    Dragon Quest IX

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

A decent gaming year, I guess. Wish I had a decent PC, though.

  11. How's the battle system? Is it as hands off as XII?

No, it can actually be quite hectic at times, where you are frantically switching between optimas (or paradigms, as I think they're calling it in the English version) in order to both keep adding to the break gauge (which allows you to do multiple damage once filled) as well as keeping your party alive.

  12. ehm, i mean i am happy for you. How's the game so far? How's the soundtrack? Does the story and atmosphere suck you in like in FFX?

I was not a big fan of FFX, and I'm really enjoying the storyline in the game so far, even though it's quite confusing (both because it IS damn confusing, but also because my Japanese isn't perfect). The soundtrack is pretty good, I have to admit. I'd definately put the piano arrangement on my iPod (not a big fan of listening to original soundtracks).

I also like the progression system. The game no longer has levels per se. Instead it has crystal points, which you spend on upgrades and new abilities (similar to the sphere grid in FFX).

Now you also have roles, which you can switch in battle, although with a bit of twist. You have these things called optimas (or paradigm in the English version, I believe). You assign characters to roles (defender, healer, blaster, attacker etc.) and each role has it's own crystarium (the FF13 equivilent of sphere grid). You have to progress each character's crystariums individually, so one generally opts to choose one or two roles for each character and stick to them. When you first get into the whole optima system, you start out with two preprogrammed optimas. One is a pure attack optima, where all characters are damage dealers. The other one is more structured like a group you might find in an MMO game, where one is a tank ("defender"), one is a damage dealer ("blaster," "attacker") and one is a healer. When you're fighting weaker enemies you generally go with the pure damage dealing optima, but if you fight against, say, a boss or tougher enemies, you first use the damage dealing optima until your characters are running low on hit points, turn to the defence optima where the defender absorbs all the damage and the healer tops everyone up, and when all your characters are fully healed you go back to the damage dealing optima.

It's completely different from other Final Fantasy games (even compared to FFXII, IMO) but it's definitely worth its money. I'm totally playing it through twice, once in Japanese and once in English. :(

  13. Got Final Fantasy XIII today. It plays nice and even though I had played through the first 20 minutes of the game (via the demo that came with FF7:AC), it still felt fresh, since they have tuned the area and the battle system a bit.

Of course, the characters are designed by Tetsuya Nomura, which is really the only downside to the game so far. Oh, and that the storyline is pretty hard to understand, especially if you don't understand Japanese perfectly.

  14. Maybe Dante's Inferno, if it's a real mix of shooter+something else (ala borderlands mixing) rather than just plain shooter.

It's not a mix of shooter+something else... it's not a shooter at all.

If you've played God of War, you've played Dante's Inferno. It plays exactly the same. In other words, a button mashing action adventure where you fight hordes of demons through the nine circles of hell.

  15. I'm a little surprised they didn't polish the graphics or something, if they were going to spend time on it. I know you can up the resolution with a patch, but it doesn't look all that great.

How does it surprise you? It's not like they have a large team of developers in hand to polish the graphics of a 9 year old game.

As for the patch, I'm generally quite happy with it, but it's a bit disappointing they had to pull out the larger stash they had promised us. Respec comes as a surprise, and

being able to get a respec through the mystery quest is also pretty nice.

  16. I've been following this game for a couple of months and I have to admit that it's even more fun than I hoped for. It's by far the best ARPG I've played since Diablo II. It's really fun, the atmosphere is nice, music is very good.

Overall, I like it. Now excuse me, I have an appointment with my destroyer...

  17. I'm playing Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky...

Is it anything like Dragon Quest 8? Because I loved DQ8!

They are quite similar, but unfortunately because there are no NPCs that join your party (except for at the very beginning of the game) and there's no voice acting, it's not as charming as Dragon Quest VIII. You create all 4 members of your party and it has a class system similar to FF's job system, so it's more customizable.
