  1. I would guess Whiteleaf as well for my 2 cents.

I find this thread very fascinating. My brother often watches me play games, and in the case of fantasy games he always wants to find a real life equivalent to cultures and factions, even when none is clear or exists.  Sometimes his need to search for common threads or equivalence can drive me insane, because he cant seem to buy into the world until he figures it out. Until he can figure out that the Rhodoks of Mount and Blade are somewhat Iberian or the Bretonnians of Warhammer sound French but have Arthurian Lore, he just cant relax about the world.

  2. New content and portraits from deadfire are out, but backup your portraits folder, the new portraits will overide your old ones if you renamed them using obsidian's naming conventions.

Of course they nuke the thing the day after I spent hours converting and renaming my favorites for a definitive final folder.

P.S. Thanks for new portraits Obsidian, cant wait to check out the soulbound items.

  3. I found this build play order worked well for pacing and difficulty on POTD

Do the following but don't level up past 4:

Act I areas (Raedric's Hold final fight maybe level 5)

Endless Paths levels 1 and 2

Do the following but don't level up past 5:

    Early Defiance Bay quests

Do the following but don't level up past 6:

Most of the Act II areas with few exceptions mentioned in next bullet. This is a kinda dull period because there is a lot of content with no meaningful party progress.

Endless Paths levels 3 to 6

Do the following but don't level up past 7:

Searing Falls and Pearlwood Bluff. Skaen Temple.

Stormwall Gorge incl. Lle a Rhemen

Do the following but don't level up past 9:

Stalwart, Russetwood (enter WM I at level to 9 in order to scale up the content)

    Endless Paths level 7

Do the following but don't level up past 11:

    Durgan's Battery

Endless Paths levels 8 to 10

Do the following but don't level up past 13:

    Longwatch Falls

Endless Paths levels 11 to 13

Scaled WM II content? (not been there yet)

Scaled Act III? (not been there yet)

    Remaining levels:

    Crägholdt

Endless Paths levels 14 to 15

    Scaled Act IV

  4. I believe both Pull of Eora and Maura's Writhing Tentacles were added in an expansion but can be learned normally upon leveling up to level 7. You will not find them in any spellbooks that I am aware of, so picking those two as your leveling selections is wise. They become nearly second rate once you get the also level 4 spell Ninagauth's Shadowflame; The spam spell of death.

  5. Apologies and all credit to whoever wrote this play order, but I found this a useful self gimping guide, pre-WM part 2.

  6. I thought he did good job articulating the improvements made in White March. The improvements happened over  12 patches and such a long time, it became hard to distinguish all the new features I appreciated over time.

I hope they never do a mid game expansion again. The Ambiguous starting level and lack of good narrative break in which to explore what is essentially a side quest in terms of presented motivations for the Watcher drove me as crazy as a Watcher. A great deal of improvements were introduced but mixing it in with the main content leaves a lot of annoying conditionals.

"I should wait to start White March because my Watcher is slowly going mad if I dont figure out what Thaos did."

"I should start the White March after act 2 because it kinda works for the narrative. Oh wait, I have completed MOST of the game without getting to use all those cool White March items"

"I should start White March early to enjoy all the new items, oh wait the most engaging combat of the game was lower level than it would have been and now when I go back to finish act 2 and 3 they are to easy because I leveled in White March. Also causes a dichotomous narrative. "

  7. Good for the consoles I suppose, doesn't seem like it would be a great return on investment. Consoles have not shown a great interest in the genre from what I can gather, though the divinity series seems to want to change that.

I am not surprised Paradox is choosing to do this. Their pricing for Pillars of Eternity and its expansions post release seems kinda out of sync with the rest of the industry. The products kept to their original price points for far longer than is normal, with some markets worse than others. It has kept the game out of two thirds of my role playing friends. I thought my D&D group would get into this but only the other fan of isometrics bought it, while the others were on a long wait for a sales train that came to late.

Hey Paradox, after your done with that port there is a dead horse out back that needs kicking and a bloodstone that needs squeezing, get on it!  :deadhorse:

  8. According to my phrenology you rogues are merely suffering from a malady of the spirit, brought on by ill humors and a soul sickness inherited from a longtime soul ancestor. A treatment beginning with leeches and trepanning is necessary to balance the humors and release some soul rot, followed by Harmonic Feedback Therapy and a mild Tidal Magnetism treatment. Should this fail to treat you rogues properly, we shall try a spirtual prothesis, grafting your soul onto those of kidnapped Kind Wayfarers.

Aperture Animancy, we do what we must because we can.

  9. Whoa there man, give em time to work on it. I do not think it is remotely realistic to expect a release date yet.

We invest in crowdfunded games so that there is not some publisher telling our favorite developers to be finished before X and end up compromising the game. So why would you start in on them as a crowdfund participant?

  10.

Well we'll have to play the game to find out were and when we meet them. Why should we care right now?

As for their levels, as Sawyer said, there was no explanation about their levels in Pillars 1 either ;)

Yeah, narratively those two situations aren't the same. Encountering them for the first time, their level can be *anything* and it makes sense because you don't know what they were up to before you met them.

In the second game, not so much. If their level is under max, something has changed and it requires and explanation to make any logical sense.

Applying logic to addressing levels in RPG narrative doesn't seem like the best approach. I personally don't always look at levels in RPGs as an expression of my characters growing skill, simply my progression through the games difficulty curve. When you play through lets say Witcher 3 as Geralt, you dont really think you helped Geralt greatly increase his skills and prowess with each level? Geralt has at least 2 lifetimes worth of experience on the path, he was a (fictional) badass long before the games narrative kicks in and gives the player agency.

To me addressing changes in relative power from one game to another in narrative is the RPG equivalent of talking about midichlorians in Jedi. I didn't need DBZ power levels for martial space monks in space, I dont need them for my martial monastic in a tropical archipelago.  That being said, I know we will likely face that very writing scenario with the awakening and the subsequent flight of Eothas. I just hope the explanation doesn't go to far beyond that with The Watcher or any companions.

"Hey Pallegina whats up? Your soul sure looks weaker since we last saw each other!"

"Hey Watcher, thanks for noticing! Eothas passed my ship doing a perfect breaststroke and stole a piece of my soul along the way. The goddess who reads the levels on my back told me I lost 16 levels! I can't even fit into my high end armor anymore. Your looking lighter around the soul yourself by the way."

  11.

In fact, MANY people in our own world are named after saints (using variant spellings) without sharing any characteristics with that particular saint. They bear their name because of fashion or their parents liking the sound of it.

I remember when I was in high school a lot of girls were called Katherine, Katrin, Caterina, etc.

One day a teacher came in and asked them if they even knew they were named after a holy woman who was tortured to death in ancient rome. They looked at him in pure shock.

So, what I'm trying to say is: Naming Ydwin after a saint (using a variant spelling) makes the world Eora with its history and languages feel very much believable and alive ... at least in my eyes and ears.

Excuse my terribly bad knowledge of the lore, but who in Eora decides who deserves to be a saint? Are there churches or other religious groups whose leaders decide so, like in irl? Or is it like a folkish hero cult more akin to pre-christian religions?

That is an excellent question who "sainted" Ydwen?

    (good points btw stargazer)

    :?)

I would imagine the Kind Wayfarers handed out the "Saint" title, given that was Ydwen's order.

  12. Peace brothers. How about Kotaku? I like the clean interface, and it covers J-games quite thoroughly.

I do like some of what Kotaku does for sure. Every once and awhile they will come out with a really good piece, and Brain Ashcroft's posts from Japan can be very informative or interesting.

  13. People whining about other sites being negative... don't understand the hilarity of the negativity vibes they give oI

I don't lack self awareness, but I clicked on like 4 topics over there and found them to be very rude. By stating my assessment I was saving those who came here with suggestions from throwing that name out, and giving some context for the type of coverage I would like to see or not see from said suggestions. Liking RPG watch so far, thanks Rjshae.

  14. Like the title says, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some gaming news sites. I read gamebanshee and rocks, paper, shotgun often, and kotaku has good writing once in a blue moon, but does anyone here use something else?

ps please dont say RPG codex, I checked it out because Infinitron does such a good job updating news here in the forums and he is very active there, but I just came from reading it for about an hour and found it to be a caustic cesspool of people who hate everything.

  15.

these threads always makes us reflect 'pon a william butler yeats poem:

the darkness drops again but now i know
that twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
and what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
slouches towards bethlehem to be born?

    curious.

    HA! Good Fun!

I only clicked in because I saw Gromnir's name on a "Player sexual companion" thread and knew it would be gold. I got this. Life is good.
