NSFW: The end of Mel Gibson's career (thank non-extant gods)
Humodour replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
The censorship level on this forum is ridiculous. *shrug* Wikipedia says: "After nearly three years of separation, Robyn Gibson filed for divorce on April 13, 2009, citing irreconcilable differences. In a joint statement, the Gibsons declared, "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so." Gibson's former girlfriend, Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva, gave birth to their daughter Lucia on October 30, 2009. In April 2010, it was made public that they had split. In June 2010, she filed for a restraining order against him, claiming he had physically assaulted her. In July 2010, it was reported that Gibson had been recorded on voicemail making misogynistic and racist remarks, telling his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, "if you get raped by a pack of ****, it will be your fault". He was also recorded threatening to burn down Grigorieva's house and that Grigorieva would perform fellatio on Gibson. Gibson was barred from coming near Grigorieva or her daughter due to a domestic violence restraining order. In another alleged recorded conversation, Gibson acknowledged punching Grigorieva in the face, claiming she "deserved" it, and Gibson is also alleged to have told Grigorieva that "I will bury you in the rose garden." Well, there goes alcohol too! You don't want to be a hypocrite, do you gromnir? Wait, of course you do.

I'm amused you engaged him in the first place. Surely you've known him long enough to know what he is like?

Also one of the hardest problems to address. Find out why people want to willingly lobotomise themselves and convince them that getting all "recreational" is not the best answer. Entirely anecdotal, but I've never met a susbstance user (short of tea and coffee) face to face that struck me as particularly sympathetic. Yes you have, I guarantee it. There really is a shocking amount of prejudice and assumption going on in this thread. I should feel ashamed on behalf of recreational drug users everywhere. I'm going to just settle for thinking less of you instead. While Gorth's statement is laughably naive, in his defence he did include (by omission in his list of exclusions) alcohol in the list of substances he finds distasteful.

You think pot should be illegal and that smoking tobacco has little correlation with cancer. Hooray!

Who's designing this?

Hahahahaha! This is awesome. -
I dated a heroin addict earlier this year. It did not go well. I can understand your feelings with respect to dealers. I hate dealers with a passion (except those who deal purely in weed - but many try to push **** like cocaine and heroin because it makes more profit). And this is one more reason I support legalisation.

I've read up on marijuana as a gateway drug and it seems to be bull****. The stats I saw indicate the vast majority of marijuana users (including those who did it rarely or only once or twice) went no further than marijuana their whole lives. I'm happy to have somebody like Hurlshot or Enoch (who I respect to not try and warp the truth, unlike Wrath or Gromnir) shed some light on that issue. I might do a search in the morning.

Yeah, Monte's post was a bit out of the blue. I dunno what caused his personal vendetta against Google, but his rant against them doesn't mesh with my perception of them or dealings with them. Being a capitalist company doesn't necessitate being rapacious or only caring about profit. Especially not when altruism and generating profit go hand in hand, or the altruism doesn't much alter your profit-making.

Julia Gillard replaces Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister of Australia
Humodour replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
The thing is Wals, Australia has a reasonably large progressive element, especially at the moment. Even during Rudd's anti-zenith the coalition was barely in front, and it lasted only 2 weeks before he was back on top. Gillard is now on 55-45 on the two-party preferred vote. There is a clear will for centrist politics in Australia, and it utterly dominates the populist right-wing element (mainly social, not economic these days) - so why are the politicians in Labour and Liberal pandering more and more to the right? -
Cool. Go trample somebody else's civil rights, please.

God damn you're clueless. Weed is not physically addictive, unlike opiates, cocaine, alcohol and even caffeine. You can form a psychological dependence to weed, but the risk is low (less than 10% of those who use it - 10% being the number of smokers who smoke it daily, but anybody with 1st year psychology under their belt would be able to point out that frequency of enjoyment is not equal to level of addiction), and no different from the risk of getting 'hooked' on alcohol. But the real thing that annoys me about your ignorance is that you think weed destroys lives! Holy crap the **** you come up with sometimes man. Clearly you've never smoked. I'm not even sure you've drunk alcohol. You can get tipsy on alcohol without getting drunk and you can get buzzed on weed without getting stoned - anybody with any sort of life experience or common sense can tell you that there is a gradient of effects. In fact it requires a fair few cones and a concerted effort to get actually stoned, rather than just buzzed. It's very much like the alcohol gradient in my experience, and I don't even have a tolerance as I don't do it enough.

That's the fascinating thing about stuff like facebook and youtube and Apple's products. Suddenly IT people are cool and respected. Hey, I'm not complaining.

Activision wishes to abolish consoles, migrate entirely to PC
Humodour replied to Humodour's topic in Computer and Console
Actually, speaking of OnLive, they have a limited beta thing going and I've heard from a few people that it is actually playable without any more noticeable lag than normal online gaming. The bigger problem is really the fact that you actually have to buy all the games ala Steam before you can play them via OnLive in addition to a subscription fee. Not that it's coming to Australia anytime soon, but looks like the thing actually works. As an Australian I can verify that any game with around 200ms lag is completely playable (and in fact, the lag is not visible). But for a lot of yanks and euros, 200ms is going to be a deal-breaker, even if it doesn't impact on gameplay. I imagine it'll come to Australia pretty quickly. Australia is a large, very wealthy market with lots of gamers and a 100mbps fibre to the home network being rolled out as we speak. I don't say this out of a sense of entitlement, just from observation of business musings on Australia. Aus is also a hub for tech support and customer service for the Asia region due to our time offset (tech support centres in Europe and America are asleep, so they build centres here to cater to Asian timezones). -
This makes no sense from a biological point of view, wals. The GABA system is no less complex than the cannabinoid system, and the cannabinoids have just as complex an interaction in the brain as ethanol does, even if it's a structually more complex molecule. Ethanol is not harmless. It's not even more harmless than cannabis. It DOES cause permanent damage to the brain when used daily in larger doses (e.g. half a dozen standards or more). It also leads to a statistically significant increased risk of disease and cancer. Wikipedia has an awesome aggregation of all the health impacts of alcohol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_consumption_and_health Everyone assumes that when I compare weed to alcohol I'm trying to imply that weed is safe. Wrong. I'm trying to point out that alcohol is dangerous, it's legal yet weed is no worse than it and illegal. Marijuana is not native to Africa. Are you sure they didn't use wild dagga (also known as marihuanila)? Dagga is also the nickname for marijuana in Africa now, but before it was introduced, Leonotis leonurus (dagga) was what was used. It has some slight chemical similarities in structure, and from my experience produces all the euphoric/positive/social effects of weed without any of the depressant/narcotic/sedative effects. This would make far more sense as the drug the Zulus used if what you said is true. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonotis_leonurus

Heathen: Gromnir has been trolling these boards on and off for many years mate. Don't feed him. Actually, a fair number of scientists and mathematicians use drugs a fair bit when they're stumped on problems and such. Mainly stimulants (especially ADHD meds like Ritalin and amphetamines) and hallucinogens (LSD and shrooms). But yeah, marijuana is a drug more suited to progress in the arts. From my experience, compared to something like LSD, you're not going to get those sudden insights or eureka moments while stoned, IMHO. Do I think it's a good idea to take drugs to boost creativity? Sure, every now and then. It's brilliant to get that different perspective from time to time. But it shouldn't be used to replace your own creativity all the time or anything. These guys made a choice. Marijuana and shrooms didn't do this (I might feel differently if they were pumped on heroine or something). These are both some of the least harmful drugs in existence (non-addictive and contemplative with low self-harm level), and I can guarentee you they think about their situation a fair bit when they trip on shrooms - how to improve it, how they got there, etc. Agreed.

Not unless they can get the lag from OnLive below 200ms. -
Cannabis is legal there? What country? Are you sure it's not decriminalised? Examples of countries where weed is decriminalised (generally considered to be a small fine, no criminal record, no gaol time) but not legalised: Australia (half of the states) Portugal Spain Netherlands Belgium Czech Mexico Norway Russia Countries where it remains criminalised (gaol time possible for any amount): Canada Denmark Germany India (ironic, I know!) Italy Ireland Japan New Zealand Poland South Africa There's not much of a pattern here. Countries with some of the most pro-marijuana cultures and highest use rates (e.g. New Zealand and Canada) have no decriminalisation whatsoever, which leads law enforcement to ignore it rather than notice it in many cases. Edit: Arguably Portugal and Spain have legalised possession for personal use, however it's a far cry from legalisation Prop 19 style. If this passes, California will truly be at the frontier of drug law rationalisation.

Humodour replied to Humodour's topic in Computer and Console
To be fair, Kotick is a ****. However, **** or not, any efforts on Activision's part to eliminate the console market and broaden the PC one will have repercussions. Interestingly, Electronic Arts (EA) thinks the same way: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7052420.stm Consider this: you've essentially got the 4 biggest names in the industry swinging their weight behind the PC market: Blizzard, Valve, and now Electronic Arts and Activision. -
I never get any sort of 'weed hangover', but my mate says he wakes up with a 'fluffy head' the next day. I find it pretty easy to write and type while high. Enjoyable, too. My dialogue style changes slightly.

Obsidian would like to work on Chrono Trigger
Humodour replied to funcroc's topic in Obsidian General
1 million copies is a lot if you only had a small team (20 or so) working on the game for only a year or so, and used a pre-existing engine and IP rented for cheap from a friend (Bioware)
